Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

richmond, thanks too for your reply which slipped in as I was typing (slowly). That site is the one I've just found and it looks really good. I always wondered what the writing on the tyres meant! Must stop burying my head in the sand and tackle "cars" one day. Thanks so much for the info Very Happy .

On a related issue.....I'm just wondering if anyone can advise me about whether hertz's rental depots in the alps routinely supply chains with their cars? We are going to hire a car from Friedrichshafen and drive into switzerland. I can pre-book snow tyres for a bit more, which I'll do, but if I need chains as well..... do they supply them does anyone know?
Cheers

I went to Austria via Munich with hertz hire cars. I pre booked snow chains but they 'forgot' about them and then gave us ones that didn't fit and a pair that weren't actually a pair! Unfortunately we didn't notice that until we were going because it only snowed at the end of our holiday. A man from the village garage sorted us out and even fitted the chains in the middle of the night. I suggest you ring when you are outbound to check all is well and then have a good look at the chains before you leave the airport.

I'm going to be driving to Zermatt in the Feb half term and although I've seen loads of advice to get winter tyres that would make the exercise pointlessly expensive. I'm going to the bottom of the valley and getting a train from there. If the weather looks bad I guess we can get the train from further out. I'l be taking chains because it's a legal requirement and if I have to use them it will be at 10 miles an hour!
