Would like to avoid if possible. I know the UK dates. But can anyone tell me please those for France, Spain, Belgium, etc? I seem to recall France having 3 two week periods between early Feb and early March but not sure of the actual weeks.

I don't know the dates but if you check any on-line ski and boot hire company that operate in Europe the dates when they have no equipment for hire corespond to the french school holiday dates.

French schools split their holidays into 3 zones, some staggered, some not. Unfortunately this list only gives dates from July:
This was culled from http://www.expatica.com/actual/article.asp?subchannel_id=25&story_id=26706#4
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
ZONE A (GREEN) - Caen, Clermont-Ferrand, Grenoble, Lyon, Montpellier, Nancy-Metz, Nantes, Rennes, Toulouse
ZONE B (BLUE) - Aix-Marseille, Amiens, Besançon, Dijon, Lille, Limoges, Nice, Orléans-Tours, Poitiers, Reims, Rouen, Strasbourg
ZONE C (GREY) - Bordeaux, Créteil, Paris, Versailles
The calendar for public school holidays is organized into three zones; some dates coincide for all three and others are staggered, most notably the 'Winter Vacation'. To check dates for your zone, see this website. (Note that private schools and some small number of public schools do not subscribe to the zone system and set their own calendar.)
July 4
Summer Break for all three zones
September 4
Back to School for all three zones — La Rentrée
October 27-November 7
Vacation of Toussaint for all three zones
Edit: Or just check the post above!

Helen Beaumont, thanks and to all others. I was curious because we've booked Tignes for the week commencing Sunday March 11th but there was limited choice of hotels both in Tignes and Val d'Isere whereas the week before and afterwards offered more opportunities.

No French holidays start w/c 11th March 2007, in fact no areas of France are holiday at that time.
