Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... Kitzbuhel grass report 20-27 Jan 07

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Well, pleased to report grass heights of about 3-4 inches on the lower slopes, higher in some places depending on where livestock has been grazing. Upper slopes conditions are a bit more patchy due to covering in limited places of white icy stuff.

Went for a nice walk today, luckily not too quiet as there is the constant accompaniment of the sound of helicopters who are doing an excellent job of taking the snow from other areas and confining it to one narrow strip.

Good news also for the grass as it has rained quite a bit today so there may be increased grass height to report later on.

If you feel the need to slide on the white stuff there is no skiing from Kitz - ski bus to Kirchberg where there are 4 runs open or ski bus to Pass Thun where there are also 4 runs. Very icy apparently, turning softer mid-day.

Getting the train tomorrow to Zell am Zee where we can at least get onto the glacier and ski. Probably along with everybody else.

Had a happy few hours in the Londoner last night - I daresay we'll be spending more time there!

Those coming out next week, conditions are meant to improve with snow & cold temps forecast.

I'm also in Kitz at the moment. Lower down it is certainly very brown grassy. I went in a ski school group over to and up the Fleckalmbahn. Very busy up there. Ok maybe the snow was a bit soft and brown but at least we got some skiing done. It was quite foggy up there with snow/icy rain and wind. The fact that the snow was a bit brown did actually improve being able to see it in the fog. The top bit was the best bit. At the end of the day we went down a lumpy icy run to the Hahnenkamm bahn. It was cold enough up there for it to still be icy even at the end of the day. I still had a good day though Madeye-Smiley Lots of snow forecast so it can only improve.

I'll look out for you out on the slopes cathy. I'm with a large ski school group - hopefully to be split down a bit tomorrow!!

Strange - on our hill walking yesterday we kept coming across red circular signs with numbers on them. Don't know what they were for Puzzled I stayed balanced though and got down with good extra effort put in.

Got the train to Zell am See today, and then the bus on to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Excellent journey - only took 50 mins & 20 Euros (return) to Zell. Conditions on the glacier were challenging - so many people there, and so many people out of control & couldn't ski! Very flat light & hard-packed windswept conditions in place. Sorry Stewart - more a case of survival than technique........ but the red jacket did see some action at least! Toofy Grin Train went through Leogang (back of Saalbach) - skiing looked non-existent there.

No fresh snow today here in Kitz and local forecast says none tomorrow. Forecast for Wednesday but time is running out for us....... Feel very sorry for the town and all the money they have lost by the Downhill & Super G being cancelled.

I think tomorrow we are going to get the train to either Innsbruck or Salzburg - I think Innsbruck is nearer but we'll sort that out tomorrow. Wednesday we may actually buy a local lift pass!

Glad you're having a good time topcat! We'll probably go over to Pass Thurn on Wed but I don't know if the ski school go there or stick to the top of the Fleckalmbahn.

Oh well, beats a week in the office Madeye-Smiley

The snow conditions are getting better each day and it's not so brown now. The temperatures have dropped alot so the snow cannons were going all day yesterday and then it snowed this morning aswell, which has helped. There are still not very many runs open and it's quite busy as everyone from the surrounding areas is coming here. Apparently the best snow is here at the moment!! It must be pretty bad everywhere else then. This afternoon moguls were forming on the upper slopes so it got a bit tricky at times but it was still a good day. The visibility today and yesterday was much better and we've even had a bit of sun. Smile More runs maybe opening tomorrow and if the 3S bahn is open then I think we're going over to Penglestein. Some guys from our hotel went there today though and said the visibility was bad so hopefully it may clear up tomorrow.

Not sure if we'll make it over to Pass Thurn cathy. If we go over there it'll be later in the week.

Bad move today - woke up to a dusting of snow and thought aha off to Pass Thurn! snowHead Only to get there & find 0 visibility. 4 runs open and nobody knew where they were. A group shot off the edge, only to see them walking back up 5 mins later. Nobody going off skiing. As the next ski bus back was at 2 pm that was the day gone. Snowing this evening and due to snow tomorrow - will be getting first bus over to the Fleckalmbahn ........fingers crossed! There's been a lot of apres this evening without too much skiing Toofy Grin Internet cafe about to close now so will have to go back to the Chelsea match..... Shocked

cathy, oh dear, I had hoped that by now there would have been some fresh snow for you. Sad

Sincere commiserations to you both.

Would it be worth hiring a car and driving to Hintertux? If you went back to the autoroute you could probably do it in not much more than an hour - traffic permitting of course Confused There is 60+km of piste there, so it shouldn't be as busy as Zell.

Well I hope you had a better day today cathy. Sounds like you've not been having much luck. We skiied from the Fleckalmbahn yesterday and it was lovely all day - quite sunny but a cold wind. It is possible to ski from the top of the Hannekamm bahn now. We've been up and in that area all today and the snow just gets better and better each day.

Ah great day today! Woke up to snow falling in resort & we made first tracks up on Pengelstein! snowHead Took first lift up and skied all day - with plenty of hot choc breaks! Toofy Grin Looks like about 5 cms fell but that's enough to refresh the slopes nicely. Hopefully more runs will open up tomorrow. Great to see Kitz looking like a ski resort finally! Shortly after I posted that suggestion, I read somewhere on here that Hintertux was actually rather hard-packed/icy, so it might not have been a good option anyway. Maybe you should stay on for a second week now that things have improved wink

Don't get too excited. Temps look set to ramp back up again across the Alps next week. Zero isotherm may hit 3000m, particularly in the West, for a day or two. Higher stations will see some snow, but lower ones may be less lucky.

Hi Cathy,

Glad to hear you have had some snow and good skiing. Not worried about the lawnmower at the moment, they got a decent dump in Les Arcs at the start of the week - 40cms according to ski club - and it is due to stay cold all week. Certainly cold enough back here, we had snow yesterday - the students were making a snowman when I went to Hawkshead. Enjoy your last couple of days : Madeye-Smiley .

Well the novelty of skiing the same few runs on hard-packed ice, man-made snow and a few cms of fresh has worn off a bit........ got first lift up again today and the first hour or so was great. But once the hordes arrived and scraped the fresh off it wasn't very pleasant. The OH joined up with the Ski Club rep to go over to Resterhohe in the afternoon - I couldn't be bothered....... Shocked Toofy Grin so finished about 1 pm. Just doing a spot of shopping and watching all the huts being erected in town - there must be a lot of gluhwein going to be drunk this weekend Toofy Grin

Current snow depths 5/14 cms. No fresh snow today, but nice sunny very cold day - I had 2 pairs of inner gloves on plus a balaclava under my helmet and a fleece neck. Nice and toasty Little Angel

cathy,

Sorry to here about the snow conditions.

I blame it all on the amateur weather forcasters on snowHead who lift people expectations by trying to forecast whats going to happen in a week/months/years time when anybody who lives in the mountains knows that only 3 day forecasts have any chance of happening NehNeh

Enjoy the atmosphere & vino in the village and look forward to your next trip in a few weeks time. Laughing

I think the forecasters here are pretty good and are always saying the forecast can change & normally only predict trends - keep up the good work Brian, Skanky & Carled! snowHead

Stop it now! Big White currently 208 cms snow depth - about 200 cms more than I skied on last week! wink Toofy Grin

Aaaagh - why does it always dump when you leave a resort?? Bus pick up at 5.30 am this morning - with big thick sticky snow falling fast - hope the slalom wasn't cancelled due to too much snow! Shocked

Well from when I finished early on Thursday I was quite pleased I did - a day for idiots out on the slopes with the little bit of snow that had fallen. 3 helicopter rescues of injured skiers from the pistes and countless skidoo rescues. They said it was one of their busier days for a long time.

Snow falling overnight on Thursday meant most of the ski area opened on Friday and we were able to ski over to the Jochberg slopes and Pass Thurn for the first time. Had a great day on real soft squeaky snow - and some rock hard slopes with death cookies Shocked Anyone going out there soon should have a great time.

And its true how little snow is required for slopes to be skiable in Austria - I think upper slope depth is about 17cms and is fine - obviously off piste is a bit limited and I think there was only 1 black open but otherwise fine.

All in all, despite the snow it turned out to be a great week and very enjoyable. It wasn't a week full of skiing but we did have a good time snowHead So need to be too worried Chris Bish! Laughing

cathy, sorry to read your grass reports (but they were very funny Very Happy ) Relieved to hear you had a good week overall. When's your next trip? If it's any consolation, we're off to Meribel at Half term and hoping (but not really expecting) to have the first really decent snow this year - and it will be my fourth trip this season!. Have enjoyed them all though, I think the theme of this season so far in Europe has been 'make the best of it' snowHead .

Hoppo, our transfer bus dropped off a large group at Westendorf who looked so disappointed - they go there every year - and the hills all around were just green grass. But coming back this morning there was such a change - even the road was covered. By the way, Westendorf looked a lovely place Very Happy .

AxsMan, I'd noticed you'd been racking in the trips wink ...... I'm sure Meribel in half-term will be fine Toofy Grin . We're off to Canada mid-March for 2 weeks and although its not a certainty wink the snow should be good. The most disappointing thing is that this year I really wanted to make an improvement in my skiing which has been dithering along for the last few years. Hence the Snoworks week in Dec with my excellent instruction wink which I wanted to build on in Kitz and Canada. I had booked private instruction in Kitzbuhel but because of the conditions I cancelled & will spend the money instead on more instruction in Big White snowHead
