60mm of precipitation will on average = 600mm of snow or 60cm. If it's very cold and the snow has very low water content then it could be a bit more, ie the snow is less dense so the precipitation goes a bit further. If the air temperature's warmer and the area it's falling is close to the sea (wetter snow) it may be more dense and occupy a smaller volume.
Blimey that sounded rather scientific for someone nearer Jade Goody than Richard Dawkin on the boffin scale...

Just a quick note all (I think I'll put this onto the site as well as it's obviously confusing everyone!!), we are multiplying the precipitation amount by 10 whenever snow is forecast, so you don't need to do anything to that figure to get the likely snow depth figure.

Hi Brian, no the forecast snow is already converted for you - the amount in mm is the amount forecast to fall (so divide by 10 to convert to cm's).

Paul - Netweather, I was just looking at one of your forecasts for Les Gets. A couple of days you are giving rain, although the freezing level you show is below that of the village, just wondering why that is?

Hi Dave, what this is down to is the fact that we didn't get time this year to height adjust our forecasts, so the height of each forecast location is dictated by the height that the GFS system has for that grid square. How that is worked out is an average for that area, so can be below village height, can be above. On this one the forecast is for below the village.

So - for the hard of understanding - if the forecast is for rain based on the average height for the grid square - but the freezing level is actually below 1172m - then the forecast should be for snow in Les Gets and not torrential rain as indicated ?

Yes, in many situations, precip above the freezing level will be of snow, but not always, so be warned!

Paul - Netweather, is there a way of doing an "overview"? As far as I can see you get high time resolution summaries which you can go through by button pressing - what I'd like to do is see a daily summary for the full 16 days (or even 2 day summary).
