Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Murren or St Christoph?

 Poster: A snowHead

My boyfriend and I have flights booked to Zurich for a long weekend in a couple of weeks time and can't decide which resort to go to. Availability is very low so we are down to either Murren or St Christoph (next to St Anton). Does anyone have any advice on which of these might be better for a) skiing b) pubs/bars? Also, we fly in late on the Thursday so would try to get a taxi or hire a car, but I can't figure out which is easier to get to by car.

Or does anyone have any experience of Engelberg? We are looking for a pictoresque resort with enough skiing for 4 days.

All advice much appreciated!! Puzzled

Leonie, welcome to snowHead s.

I've not been to any of these places but I'm sure someone who has will be along in a minute, in the meantime ...

Murren is car-free, I think you have to do the last bit by mountain railway and/or cable car so St Christoph is probably easier from that point of view.

Engelberg is very highly regarded for its off piste, not sure it's particularly picturesque by Swiss standards though.

As brian says, Murren is car free, so you would have to get the cable car up. If you're going to be very late, it's worth checking out if they run all night/what time they stop. It's also not the most exciting resort if you want wild apres-ski.....but the skiing is okay!!

No need for a car for Murren - just get the train all the way from the airport. The journey takes longer by car, so if the rail schedule gets you to Lauterbrunnen too late to get the last cable car up to Murren, you'd never make it by car either.

Ah thank you, I see now that the last train leaves before the plane arrives so that is very good advice. St Christoph or Engelberg I think it is then!!

I have never been to St Christoph 1800m (St Anton ski area) but have been once or twice to Murren.

The last cablecar upto Murren (1650m) leaves Lauterbrunnen at 20:47. If you are going to visit Murren than i would suggest using the train for comfort and being hassle free, the train journey will take approx 3hrs from Zurich airport to Lauterbrunnen with around 3 changes (depending on time).

The skiing in Murren for 4 days will keep you busy but if you are looking for loads of pubs etc then i wouldnt bother. Murren is a traffic free small village with a great friendly atmosphere containing only a few bars and one night club.

Any more advice...just post !!

Elizabeth B, the last cablecar to Murren from Stechelberg leaves at 23:10 but i dont know if the bus from Lauterbrunnen still operates at that time of night so i just used the Lauterbrunnen/Murren connection as an example

Leonie, St Christoph is a really nice little village, but it really is very little! That said if you just want a few quiet restaurants, and no noisy pubs, then it would be ideal. Although being on the small side you will have to check availability, and you will also find its not cheap. As for skiing, there will be way more than you can do in a few days. Very Happy

St Christoph connects to St Anton by lift, and the same lift pass lets you also ski Stuben, Zurs, and Lech. You need to catch a bus to get to the last 2 - about 20 minutes. If you have a car, then getting to St Christoph from Zurich will be relatively easy.

I have not been in the village at night, but it is very small and I get the impression it would be quiet because most of the places are exxey. I could however be wrong - there are 2 bars that I know that have a pretty good apres-ski scene - which seems to start around midday! Maybe they continue into the night.

St Christoph is all 4 & 5 Star Hotels. THe finest being Arlberg Hospiz Hotel which is offering some great deals this season (because of the lack of German customers)

Chris Brookes, if they had a car though, then it wouldn't matter if the bus was running rolling eyes
