mongoose, Welcome to snowheads.
My brother in law has spoken to his friend who is out instructing in Mayrhofen and he has said there is plenty of skiing. There is no snow in resort but up at 2000m there is enough. Some snow is forecast for Friday.
Hope this helps.

Sage, Hi sage, during jan you posted your brother in law friend is in mayrhofen instructing, well we are off again shortly. Any chance your brother in law could ask his friend about local conditions for mayr and kaltenbach, so we can get a headsup on conditions
cheers

Just got back on sat from mayrhofen. What can I say..... Brilliant week, loads of snow, great food and beer!
First day on slopes (sunday) was very warm! snow was slushy and lower runs where patchy, but up top was good and I dont mind a bit of slush when im boarding.
From Monday to Wednesday snow fell pretty much all the time! Must have had well over 50cm, and loads in the town aswell.
From then on it was powder all the way! Off piste was deep powder thigh deep in most places! But after a day or two it became a bit tracked with everybody having fun in thew powder.
On piste became hardish but was still excellent!
Night life in mayrhofen is good, as is the food. Mo's bar is always busy but the food is good and the local bottle of beer is nice
We normally went in ice bar after coming off the slopes, the large bottle of beer in there is great after a long day on the slopes.
Scotland yard is worth a visit, nice pint of guiness! and darts, also good finger food.
If you fancy a chinesse, there is one near scotland yard. I thought it was excellent!
As for other bars i liked winwin, clean large bar with a mini casino. We won around 100 euro over the week. Cheap beer aswell!
We didnt bother going to near by resorts except Hintertux, went up there on the thursday. fast red runs where good but i think its better for skiers up there. It was also very very cold! -18 at top 3250m.
Overall great holiday and boarding, would go back
any questions welcome.

How's it looking at the moment ? I'm tempted for a New Year trip but know nothing about the place ?

david@mediacopy, There are 4 chairlifts open at the moment on the Hoarberg and the Penken. The Mayrhofen Lift company website is here:
http://winter.mayrhofner-bergbahnen.com/
although for some reason I can't see it on my computer... The Mayrhofen tourist website is here:
http://www.mayrhofen.at/
which I can see but took a bit of searching before I found anything sensible to read about snow.
Interactive pistemap is here:
http://ski3.intermaps.com/Zillertal/index.asp?chn=zoom4&Aktuell=Lifte&lang=de
It's snowing on the mountains at the moment and the weather forecast is for more cold and snow to come. There are still a couple of weeks to go before New Year week, so it's perfectly feasible that there will be truck loads of snow by then... And if there isn't, Hintertux glacier is a bus ride away and the snow up there is fantastic at the moment.

Holy thread resurrection Batman! Would it not have been easier to start a new thread rather than bring one back from 2007?
Anyway, looks good at the moment - 170cm on top (edit: according to the resort website - but this may be last year's closing figure, as j2ski.com has it listed as 70cm), 10cm in the valley, but bear in mind that the valley is at 700m or so, and the skiing stops at 1300m on Penken. The Ahorn run into town has good snowmaking coverage, and the weather is good enough that it should be open all the way down.
See http://www.feratel.com/en/livecams-weather/austria/tirol/mayrhofen.html?tx_webcam_pi1%5Bview%5D=6&tx_webcam_pi1%5Bview2%5D=1&tx_webcam_pi1%5Bcid%5D=5635 for streaming video of the main mountain. Currently snowing and with good cover.
There are several threads on here with details of the town and its lift problems, all with good solutions, so I'd recommend it.

SaraJ, Cheers Sarah. I had a look at the http://www.mayrhofen.at/ site but as you say it's not the most intuitive if you are after the current ski conditions.
If there is snow, is the skiing pretty good ?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

david@mediacopy, I think the skiing is great there, although, as always, it depends on what you're looking for. The more time I spend on Snowheads the more I realise that everyone has a different opinion of what good skiing means!
I think Mayrhofen has a good variety of terrain... Not a lot of choice of pistes for beginning intermediates (early blue run skiers) but otherwise there's plenty. Someone mentioned in a different thread that there isn't much for expert skiers, but there is lots of off piste to find if you know what to look for. The glacier isn't far away if you like the big mountain adventure feel that you would find somewhere like Tignes.

SaraJ, Cheers
I'm easily amused especially if there is some off piste available, so it sounds perfect. I did some training in the Summer on the Glacier a few years ago so it would be good to see it in the Winter.

david@mediacopy, Some ideas to start you off...
Ride the Larchwald chairlift and see how it's looking underneath - good on poor visibility days as you can ski between the trees.
Unterbergalm chairlift also has possbilities off the side.
It's likely to be busy at New Year. If there are too many people around for your liking go up to Hintertux.
Make your way over to the Eggalm ski area too, it tends to be quieter and has a bit of character to it - definitely no cruisey motorways over there.
The Ahorn valley run goes on forever. Either get up there first thing and ski the valley run while it's still freshly groomed or go later in the afternoon, go up to the Igloos for a hot chocolate and then be the last people to ski down before it goes dark.

the area under the 150er Tux cable car usually has a lot of (pretty extreme) tracks

This is true, but I wouldn't be rushing over to that area if you are at all unsure about the avalanche risk. Avalanches around there are pretty common.

SaraJ, Cheers. We're still trying to get booked up. The deals we had our eye on went pretty quickly so we're still on the look out. Fingers Crossed.
Sounds like you know the area well - are you based in the Valley ?
