Poster: A snowHead

If the lack of snow so far this season is a sign of things to come, more and more people will want to ski at high altitude resorts. This could have a serious impact on bird populations in the Alps, according to a study from scientists at the University of Turin. The scientists looked at Alpine grassland locations (on, near or far away from ski slopes) over two summers to assess the impact of skiing on Alpine bird populations. They found a marked decline in bird numbers around ski runs when compared to natural grasslands. ...If winter snowfalls became less reliable at lower altitudes, the researchers are concerned that there will be pressure to develop new runs at higher altitudes, threatening the natural habitat of local wildlife. They have called for developers to adopt environmentally sensitive practises to limit damage to the fragile habitat.
The findings are published in the Journal of Applied Biology.

I thought the higher mountain runs were on rock & shale etc and the lower runs were on grass therefore how can going higher effect the grassland? In fact I would have thought it would help it.

Who paid for this study that shows that birds fly away from humans? I found that out as a child when I tried to catch them, didn't everybody else?

Dypcdiver, thats using common sense.
Large organisations do not use common sense unless they are told to do so by a committee that has assessed the implications of using common sense by the work force and to what end your human rights are infringed on and the health & safety implications of using common sense are shown to be effective. All which cost thousands of pounds to tell use what we already know.

Nick_C, Yep, a load of over paid wind bags. Now just how do I get on one of these study groups? Perhaps I need to talk with that failed politician who is getting a fortune from the EU or his school teacher wife who is getting even more for not living in Wales.
Rant over
