Or is it just too far away from anywhere and "Intrawest'y", all chichi resorty and stuff?
I ask coz I'd like to try it out, and it's where the snow's at right now, but I'm a bit too used to Salt Lake City and its $45 per night studio suites, and that makes me a bit loath to shell out 2-3 times that per night... Nice hotels, what do you want them for..? I'd rather stay for a month...
Anyhoo, any advice much appreciated.

Being cheap, especially about where you stay - I guess it's a Yankee thing, which I'm not but I guess it rubs off...
Skiing, living in an old Hoover bag - Luxury! I'd be lucky to have an old Hoover bag...

Check out the Southside Lodge or Fireside Lodge - beleive you can get a bed in a dorm from $30. Down side is there is not enough employee accomodation in Whistler so anything cheap is likely to be taken.

That's what I thought - it seems to be along way from anywhere, which is never good for the budget accomodation-inclined... plus the evil that is Intrawest, who just love prices to be bumped.

The only time i've heard that phrase is from the song "Teenage Dirtbag"
So i guess the girl that they are singing about in that song is a "cheap girl" then? Charming!

HI hostel in Whistler plus UBC lodge & a new hostel in Pemberton now the Shoestring has gone. Some workers were staying in cabins at the RV park too. It is however a world away from places in the US where you can stay in a perfectly adequate motel for $40 a night within easy driving distance of a resort.

Not sure Intrawest are entirely to blame!!
Think it's more the fact that it's a 2 hour drive from Vancouver, and loads of people paid far too much for their places so are trying to recover it on rent. Guess it all comes down to the evil of charging as much as they can get away with...
Do agree though that it is stupidly expensive and there really aren't many budget options - I too would rather blow my cash on a season pass and beer than renting an expensive condo.

shannyla, I agree with your view that Salt Lake City seems cheap compared to many other North American destinations, though Tahoe is as cheap or cheaper. I have been to Whistler but on a package. I do not think there is the plethora of motels competing on cheap rooms that you get in the previously mentioned locations.
I am relieved to discover that 'dirtbagging' is staying in cheap accommodation. I feared it might be some perverse sexual practice.

But it wouldn't preclude the latter?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Depends if you hook up with a dirtbag of the opposite sex... or indeed the same sex if that floats your boat
Anyhoo, looks like Whistler will be off my To Visit list until someone else is paying. Tahoe however sounds promising, and properly ticks all the appropriate dirtbag tickboxes.
Saying that, not long till my fortieth, and I've been dropping some major hints about CMH and Mike Wiegle Heliskiing to the other half, might as well make a trip of it...
Now for a disambiguation, as they say on Wikipedia. From Dirtrag, a mountain biking magazine but the principle still applies:
The Six Commandments of the Dirtbag
1: Never let your lack of cash get in the way of fun. Find a way.
2: Fun is the fiber of our lives. The more fun you get in life, the easier the poo-poo will pass with regularity.
3: Hair is good. Leave the body shaving to women and porn stars.
4: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's expensive gear. It starts a vicious cycle that ends with a loss of touch with the roots of your passion.
5: Buck the latest fashion trends in a big way. As rock climber Ron Kauk once said, "John Wayne never wore lycra."
6: Be happy with what you have. Humility is the path to true enlightenment.
Pretty much sums it up, especially the bit about hair...

You know it makes sense.

Not sure John Wayne is the sort of person to hold up as an example
