Poster: A snowHead
|
Just spent the last week here and despite some very strange weather (+2C at 3330m today) there is still a lot of good skiing to be had. Mont Fort in particular has been good all week and the conditions yesterday after Thursday night's light snowfall were excellent. Slopes below Ruinettes (2200m) not great but still possible to ski back to town. Front face of Savoleyres looking very bare but not too bad over the back side. Anyone skiing out here next week will still have plenty to ski on but the forecast temperature drop and snow will be very welcome come next weekend I suspect. (Just in time for my return as well )

According to the SCGB snow report "The best conditions can be found on the upper slopes" Just been talking to Linds about it.

Gosh, I'm sooooo glad I'm a member for insights like that.
It reminds me of the survey report for my current flat in London:

Flat. One of 150. Only able to inspect the flat in question and so not able to comment on the remainder the building not visible from the communal areas. Initial inspection suggests electrics in good working order although this should be confirmed through specialist electrical inspection. Initial inspection suggests wood work in good order although this should be confirmed through specialist wood inspection. |

I was out in Verbier last week as well.
I'd second BGA's comments, especially the back side of Savoleyre - that area is very quiet, and what snow there is is in ok condition, except right down at the bottom of the runs where it's soft & churned up.
I'd recommend not to bother with the Veysonnaz & "Four Valley's" area, as these are either icy/slushy - rode there last Wed, and wondere'd why I'd bothered to make the effort.
What I would point out, for anyone attracted to the 'offpiste' elements of Verbier, is that conditions are pretty marginal - the only 'itinerary' that is open is the Tortin (that you need to ride, or get the cable car down) to get to the 4 Valleys - it was fairly nasty on Friday, as it was mostly 'marbles'. All off-piste areas have limited cover.
I saw a handful of boarders taking the Closed Gentiane itinerary, the top area looks ok from a snow cover perspective, the lower area is again rock-strewn.
Avalanche risk remained at 3 all week, due to windblowing and snow on a weak base.
One upside was that several days had gorgeous weather, and the views from top of Mont Fort, to the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc etc, were stunning.
If you've a guide, there were some interesting routes being cut _properly_ off piste from top of Mont Fort, in what looked like reasonable snow.
As I left, the local expectation was for 2 weeks of high pressure (sun and no snow, warm valley conditions)
Was skiing in a thin top and jacket most of the week, in the sun in the village it's t-shirt weather....
On an unrelated topic, I hooked up with a qualified (and very good) sports masseuse - if you'd like her details, pm me, she's out there all season.

A Lovely days skiing today under pretty much clear blue skies. Spring like conditions with the freezing level around 2400. Looks like it snowed about 10cm above 2400 yesterday and fell as rain below that. Skiing above 2000 very good, plenty of slopside off to play in and few rocks or brown patches on the pistes. Below 2000 it's a bit grim and farmyard like. Runs below Au Mayen officially closed, but passable. There's a bit forecast for tommorow and Monday but the much awaited dump seems to have drifted out of sight. However the lower temps next week will allow snowmaking to recommence lower down and hopefully the nurseries will be replenished.

Started at 1400 yesterday and still coming. Been kept awake since 0500 by the noise of snow being cleared from the car park. Never enjoyed having my sleep disrupted so much! It looks like about 30cm down here. Things will be slow to open up this am as the ava risk will be through the roof. It's due to clear up by lunchtime and then the sun's due to come out. Happy days!

I was there until Wednesdy last week and conditions were fine, skied across the four valles no problems even with a few bare and icy patches here and there. With the new snow this week it should be brilliant.
Hope you have a good time, I am off to Avoriaz for the weekend and then to Verbier again 5th Feb for a few days.

You know it makes sense.

thunderer, thanks for that, I guessed it wouldn't be too bad up top but it was looking pretty poor for the runs back into the Medran lifts and especially over at La Tzoumaz, at least until the new snow this week
We go there at the same time every year and it's been a bit hit and miss with the snow cover for my last 3 trips.
