Does anyone know any?
I'll start with this one. People used to sing it mostly after a day of climbing/hiking, in memory of fallen friends. But, as a kid, I often heard it on the bus, while coming back home after a day of skiing (so I learned it):
Grigna-Grignetta
Grignetta fu.
Grigna and Grignetta are two mountains of my region. The Grigna is a steep and hard mountain, for this reputed a "bad and treacherous" one. Many have lost their lives there, even people who has climbed more internationally famous mountains...or so the lore goes.
This is a picture of the Grignetta (or Grigna meridionale-Southern Grigna-2180 mt asl, whereas the Grigna or Northern Grigna is also known as Grignone (big Grigna), 2410 mt asl:

You can find it here, where MTBiker remember one of "theirs" who has lost his life on the Grigna this past January...

Many, many others are WWI era songs, sung by the Alpini...

Matteo, most Brits 'of a certain age' will know at least the 1st verse and chorus of 'The Happy Wanderer'
My Boy Scout days campfire sing songs usually didn't have many mountain medleys. Nonsense like Ging Gang Goolie was more the norm. But there was always 'The Bear Came Over The Mountain'.
Baden Powel's got a lot to answer for ........

flying_squirrel, singing Ty Yi Yippee, Ty Yi Yippee ........
What is it about 'mountain song' chorarses that makes them so nonsensical ??
Is this a throw back to yodelling, perhaps.
And wasn't there one about Lonely Goatherds ??? If you've ever been downwind of a herd of goats, you'll know why he was lonely.

From "The Sound of Music":
High on a hill was a lonely goatherd
Layee odl, layee odl layee-oo
Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
Folks in a town that was quite remote heard
Layee odl, layee odl layee-oo
Lusty and clear from the goatherd's throat heard
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
Oho layee odllee-oo
Oho layee odl ay!
Oho layee odllee-oo
Hododlleeoay!
A prince on the bridge of a castle moat heard
Layee odl, layee odl layee-oo
Men on a boat with a load to tote heard
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
Men in the mists of a chapel dote heard
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
Men drinking beer with the foam afloat heard
Layee odl, layee odl layee-oo
[Cough cough!]
One little girl in a pale pink coat heard
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
Soon her mama with a gleaming gloat heard
Layee odl, layee odl layee-oo
What a duet for a girl and goatherd
Layee odl, layee odl-oo
Hmm hmm hmm hmm
Hmm hmm hmm hmm
Ode layee
Ode layee-ee
Ode layee
Oh Oh Oh Oh layee odl layee-oo
Oh oh layee odl lay
Oh Oh Oh Oh layee odl layee-oo
Layee odllee-o hododlleeoay!
One little girl in a pale pink coat heard
Layee odl, layee odl layoo-oo
She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd
Layee odl, layee odl-o
Soon her mama with a gleaming gloat heard
Layee odl, layee odl lay mmm mmm
What a duet for a girl and goatherd
Layee odl, layee odl-o
Happy are they layee odllayee-o oh layee odlayee layee-o
Soon their duet will becoma a trio
Layee odl, layee odl layee-o
Ode lay-ee
Ode lay-ee
Ode lay-ee-ee
Ode lay-ee
Odllayee odllay
Odllayee odllay
Odllayee odllay
Odllayee odllayee odlayee odlayee odlay!

Oh well, this is a rough translation of the above, I am by no means a poet or an
official translator so, please makeallowances for that.
To the beautiful loveless warrior
A knight went to offer his heart
(He) was singing:"To have you I want, or to die"
From the tower she saw him climbing
She told the sentinel on the bridge
"Throw an arrow to the one who climbs"
The knight fell dead
But God punished the horrible sin
And the warrior became the Grigna
A steep and fiery mountain
The sentinel on the bridge too
was transformed in a mountain and the
Grignetta came.
We still faithfully love you
Beautiful and cruel Mountain
while climbing we hear a bell
of a distant church that to pray calls
We want you, o beauty that Mountain became
We cross ourselves, you will not kill us.
On a second thought I changed the too literal "iron willed" with "fiery"

A lot of these traditional songs can be found in many languages. There is a German version of the Happy Wanderer and the Irish Rover (although not a mountain song, is is about North Sea Fishermen) and a French version of "She'll be coming round the mountain"... probably sung by Jonny Haliday (or Sylvia Vartan).

Sort of in the spirit of this thread, I hope. I was smakcked around the head with this song, when I started waffling in a Another Place's forum about philosohers. May appeal to those with a Mony Python Bent - there is a sound track file on the page.

Nick Zotov, wonderful - we'll let go the fact that M.P.F.C. imaginary 'University of Wollomalloo' where it was first performed round the sheep dip was probably as flat as the proverbial witch's tit.

We always start the Yogi Bear song, and I remember a man who could do the whole King of Caratacus song! Coach Karaoke always ended with "That Lovin Feeling" though

Surely the modern equivalent is the Macdonalds song? Heard throughout the beer kellers of St Anton.

Nick Zotov, wow - the whole back catalogue of MPFC music on that site. Must log in at home so I can listen. The office wouldn't appreciate 'Sit On My Face'
Thanks a lot.
