Julieanne, Well we booked back in June and even then week of 17th Feb was all booked due to a festival. You can do a search on TO site entering the date and criteria and it will throw up all the hotels with vancancies that match or nearly match (that's if the individual hotels have supplied the info) otherwise it's like Garfield says, you have to eamil each hotel, so copy/paste and bash as many off as you can. Good Luck

Garfield, DB, sharon1953, Thanks for the info-- yes-- I just heard from one of the hotel's receptionist that the school hols start the w/e of the 3rd February. We could possibly go next week-- mid week to weekend--some hotels do have rooms then, but a bit short notice for us...but rather tempted to go for it!

Julieanne, I had a play with the tourist office room serch it came up with a fairly big list of hotels still with space
With conditions now much better low down you will now have lots of options if you are still to book, Last week you realy needed to head for the high resorts. What a diferance a week makes.
Obertauern would still be my first choice though

Garfield, Thanks for that-- yes-- we are now rather more decided about our dates-- we are thinking of going on the 5th of February-- to the 9th--midweek. I wonder if there are any rooms available then. I shall look into it tomorrow. --we'll see how it goes!
Ps Would have been nice to meet up with you and sharon1953, and Alpenbullit---who knows -- maybe we can!

Regarding the week of February 17 and thereabout: it's Carnival, as Mardi Gras is on the Tuesday, the 20th.
So a lot of ski towns in Austria and Bavaria will be throwing some big parties during the February holidays to capitalize on the pre-Lenten merriment factor.

songfta, well that was why we had to go for the 24th, when the prices dropped and the rooms were available. But our son was thinking of joining us and I did some searching about 4 weeks ago and there seemed to be rooms still available the time we are going (son then broke his ankle whilst partying at Christmas, so never booked anything in the end!) so if you end up going on 24th, Julieanne, you might have to endure me bumping into you - no breaks!!

sharon1953, I hear 'ya! I'll be at St. Johann im Pongau from February 16-19, and the only reason I have a room there is because locals who are long-time family friends pulled a favour to snag a room. But there have been some cancellations due to the snow, so rooms are opening up here and there.

I just got back home last night having spent all week there and in my opinion there will be no shortage of snow from now to the end of the season at Obertauern. It snowed off and on all week and the snow making machines were running morning noon and night!! God only knows how much snow actually fell but my guess is it will be measured in feet not inches.
We only booked this resort last minute because of the lack of snow elsewhere, it would never have featured had it not been for it's "snow sure" claim, but I am pleased we visited there.
The skiing is quite limited, by that i mean there isn't enough for a full week(imho) without repeating runs over and over again. We were there for 6 days and decided to drive to another resort for one day(Flachau) which worked in really well and broke the week up nicely. Lots of snow there too and much longer runs.
Plenty of apres and there is a really good atmosphere in and around the village, would definitely go back and i think that is always the yardstick, what it lacks in charm it makes up with other attractions.
Obvioulsy with the snow all week vibility was poor which is always a price we pay but the last 2 days the sun did appear and we were able to witness the mountain views at last...
And another thing, most hotels were full and people were being bused in early in the week, but amazingly the longest lift queue was always the first one at the base and I guess it was never longer than 5 minutes!!

northantsred, thanks, that's great to know. The webcams are showing a white out at the mo, and I can't see anyone skiing, yet the the lifts are nearly all open according to the lift company site, but I guess the windchill factor might have kept people in the bars!!

I wish I'd have gone to Obertauern. I went to Schladming just up the road and the snow was no where near as good.

boris360, I'm amazed looking at that pic that the temp dropped low enough to make snow at all. It looked like that in Cortina in 2001, no lower runs at all, and that's where all the blue runs were, so I had a terrible time, now we only pick high altitude resorts. I hear Whistler is having a fantastic season - so enjoy.

Garfield, we grabbed a deal late in March last year, was a 1/3 of the brochure price, we just got an unexpected tax refund, so instead of being sensible and paying bills - we blew it, no refund this year, but might use the plastic if something too good to miss comes by!

northantsred, well we also have the choice of Thomson Fly now - so no need to go south! The flights are not the problem, it's transfers and hotel costs.

sharon1953, Transfers in case you have missed this on the village web site round-trip fare is € 39,90 including 30 kg of luggage as well as 1 pair of ski per person

Garfield, Hi, yes, but when we looked into this, they didn't coincide with the our arrival time unless we wanted to hang about. Same going back, no point in doing it DIY to wait around for hours at airports. It's a bargain though if your flight times fit.

How much snow at obertauern at the last snow.

j, 70/120 according to T. Office site, but warm today of +4 as a result you can see that all the snow has melted on the rails and roof tops at village level! snowforecast are predicting about 4cms of snow over the weekend and it's going to drop below freezing again, but I'm beginning to think no one really knows what's going to happed from one day to the next

sharon1953, we decided to go to the Sierra Nevada this Sunday! I heard it's snowing there a lot --it's not quite Austria--but...still snow!
Hope to go to Obertauern one day-- maybe meet you all there!
I am sure you'll have a great time with lots of snow when you go!

Sharon1953 - funny decision, why? Obertaurn has 50cm of snow more than Sierra Nevada at the moment!? Not hassling you, just wondered why your not heading to Austria as planned when they have the best conditions of the season so far!

Yes got confussed!! Actually Ive got a question for you Sharon. Im off to Radstadt in March and hope to ski locally there (Flachau is first choice) But was thinking if snow conditions are poor I may get the bus to Obertauern which is supposedly 30 mins away. Do you know how frequent the bus is from Radstadt? And if i buy an Obertauern lift pass would the bus be free?

DRHOSKING, , the bus ride from Radstadt to Obertauern will be 30mins maximum, less if you take a car or get in a taxi. I can't tell you if the bus is free or how frequent the service is. However if you pm flangesax I'm sure he will tell you because he lives in Radstadt.
Happy Skiing

Hi folks
Made it back last night
Conditions were generally excellent for the week only a couple of runs were not open from the terf 2000 cafe one is very exposed to the wind and not covered by snow cannons I think this run was on the thin side last year when there was loads more snow. The other was ski able but narrows at the top where it’s at its steepest and had not been bashed
Mostly clear skies but there was little sign of snow loss temps were below 0 most of the time. Not overly windy either.
They were using the snow cannons in some areas to keep things fresh and there was a fall of snow on Thursday night
If you can ski on a Satarday go for it the place slopes were empty we were able to ski till 1:30 before having to head for the airport
I want to be back there know

Garfield, thanks, that's great to know. Have you seen the forecast for Monday night? 11 cms and more the rest of the week - 23 in total. We don't leave airport till 5.30 pm on the Sat we return, so might just grab some early morning skiing if we have the energy and the money! 13 sleeps to go

Can you have a bad recommendation???? Dont think so...

martski, we stayed at The Snowwhite a couple of weeks ago and I would recommend it for sure. However if I were to go back I think I would prefer to stay around The Lurzeralm area which is where evryone socialises. There are several hotels around there, one is a sister hotel of SW-Hotel Cinderalla which looked v nice but pricey, depends on your budget.
