A good and often 'angry' friend of mine got his snowboard nicked in Mottaret from our Chalet sometime overnight. Another friend also had his boots taken.
Later the next morning, my mate was standing on the balcony and saw his board tucked behind some logs outside a nearby chalet. He promptly marched over and took it back. The mate who lost his boots simply walked into the nearest shop and bought a nice new pair....

AxsMan, agreed, and I put some dangle-in 22w heaters overnight to dry them and warm them.
laundryman, thats why I usually put them where the kids sleep.
I write my initials in big indelible ink letters at the tips of my skis, makes them considerably less attractive - even to me, and lets me know which way round I have them.

The only trouble is if they do get nicked hiring replacements might not be easy. Saying that I didn't lock my brand new skis up when I was in the dolomites this year and they weren't nicked. Nor were they taken by accident by some one mistaking them for their skis and they were easy to spot on the ski racks outside the restaurants - didn't see another set of skis with 7TM bindings all week

Stayed in a posh 5star hotel last year with secure boot room, and the hotel info said you can't keep your skis/board in room.
I blatantly ignored that taking my new board to my room with me and didn't have any problems with concierge or other staff.
Would stand it on the towel they give to put on the floor of the bathroom to catch any melting snow!!!
I am sad - I want my board in my room with me!!!!!

This actually makes me interested to find out how many of you guys have had their ski's stolen and what you did to avoid ruining the rest of your holiday.
Have you ever had you ski's stolen (from where - hotel or slope etc) and how quickly were you back on the slope?

had one of those type of locks whilst in Livigno about 3 seasons ago. Someone had a go at nicking my ski's but didn't manage it. however they had knackerd the combination so I couldn't open the lock either.
luckily I borrowed a hammer and smashed the lock to bits (took about 30 seconds!) however, at least 4 other skiers watched me smash the lock off, then walk away with the skis without saying a word - so i could have been stealing them for all they knew.!!!

Ive never locked skis up and have even left them outside bars and forgot about them 'til next morning (that could possibly be due to the intake of alcohol). A couple of years ago I bought a lock and used it on my snowboard outside a bar(in Cervinia), when I came out somebody had smashed the lock off the board but hadn't knicked the board, always wondered if it was an angry local annoyed that I had the cheek to use a lock in their town. Never locked up a board or skis since, but usually swap a ski over with a mates.

I normally lock my Ski's with a proper cable ski lock if they are left outside at lunch or in an unlocked public room ( since someone walked off with a set 4 years ago!)
However, when it failed to unlock over Xmas, had to find a friendly Frenchman with large cable cutters to remove them from his railings

Megamum, With hire ones it doesn't matter as much because different people se them each week, however, if you invest in your own pair over time the skis learn which way to turn, putting them on the wrong foot could lead to turning lef when you try to turn right!

How about taking the rear binding off one of the skis? Easy enough with my Axials to pop one rear binding off and pop it in my pocket then put it back on after lunch while getting Mrs Dosh to check the binding tension window for the black tell-tale that shows all is hoopy and fine.
