Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Dehydration and nose bleeds at altitude

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

I'm off to Val D'isere in about 4 weeks time. Currently just started the increased fitness regieme and starting to get really excited Smile

A question though. I suffer from a excessively dry mouth during the night when i try and sleep at allitude, to the point where the inside of my nose dries out and i get small nose bleeds (not actual running blood from the nose, but just snot crusty with blood i have to blow out in the mornings, lovely).

It was at its worst last year in Tignes, at 2100m. We'll be slightly lower this year at Val (1850m) but i just wondered if anyone had any tips for helping with this problem. I've tried putting a glass of water on the radiator to humidify the room, but that doesn't seem to work.

any tips? (other than drink less alcohol)

lower, drink less alcohol Toofy Grin

Drink more water - a lot more water

Wetting a towel and putting on the radiator overnight or over a chair in front of the heater can help with raising the humidity

Lip balm stick, shoved up the nose and rotated vigourously. Makes sharing your lip balm a right good laugh.

lower, It is indeed. I tried it with a very dry and scabby nasal passage and it works just like it does on your lips. Softens and re-lubricates the skin.

I find Tignes a pretty grim place to try to sleep for the reasonse mentioned here, but Val d'Isere noticeably better

lower, I had exactly the same problem in Tignes and found that keeping 2 Ltrs of water by the bed (and drinking it!) helped a lot.

Not tried Frosty's suggestions for nose or other 'passages' Shocked

Probably doesn't apply to lower, but some people whoe get recurrent proper nosebleeds need a prescription for antibiotic nose ointment from their GP and it works a treat if there is no obvious leaky vessel to see in the nose. cathy and Frosty the Snowman have got it spot on for you. (not sure I would want to stick a strwberry lip balm up my nose, try Labello wink )

Top tip.
Re-apply the lip balm as often as possible or even better leave it stuck up your nose (swaping nostrels at the end of each run).

lower, Our (then) 3yr old had constant nose bleeds during her first ski holiday - we had to replace the bedding in the apartment. I was told it was because the air is very dry at altitude, so the next trip, we put a humidifier in the kids room & the holiday was completely nose bleed free. Don't know if it was because she was a year older or because of the humidifier - perhaps another snowHead knows more about this.
