"The conditions really are great; there is blue sky across much of the Alps today and the wind has also dropped," says Ali Morgan from the Ski Club of Great Britain. "
Not sure this Ali Morgan is qualified as the Ski Club expert if she thinks the Alps have great conditions! The Alps still need significant snow before things are even considered good!
Very annoying!

Does "quarter of a metre" sound more than 25cm to you?
Good bit of PR speak methinks...

One snowfall does make a winter. I also noted the "metre" phrasing, definately trying to put a spin on the news.

so who "in the alps" says the conditions aren't great? Check some of the snow reports from people out there and they are saying the skiing is good!

La Tania
04 January 2007
Currently snowing hard once again afer some blue sky this morning and fantastic skiing and boarding. Creux/Chanrossa and Le Praz areas still to open officially but all runs skiable just about everywhere. Green and Blue runs down in to La Tania open with great cover. Time to head for the trees...

Les Arcs
04 January 2007
After a good foot and a half fell up at around 2,500m on the second of January, we are currently having more of the white stuff falling all around us. Having only been going on for around an hour, the tables are a few inches under already and the fall is getting thicker and heavier. Things are decidely peachy in this part of France right now.

I am. However I will admit that it's the southern alps (Isola2000). Last snowfall of note was almost 1 month ago.

The Alps is an awfully large area to generalise about - in either saying conditions are great, or conditions are bad.

You know it makes sense.

Things have greatly improved this week.
However, on balance, conditions across the Alps remain slightly below the longterm average.
Some stations have lots of natural snow (e.g. Zermatt), while others still have little (e.g. Isola 2000).
With mild temps, rain, sleet and modest snow forecast at times during the next 2 weeks, conditions could in parts deteriorate again.

I'm in the Alps, skied this morning and don't think the conditions are great. Don't get me wrong, there is some great skiing to be had but overall the conditions are pretty poor. It depends on your POV of course. Intermediates will probably have great fun on any slopes above 1500 meters at the moment. However this morning it rained to 1800 meters and the snow was developing a rain crust on some aspects off-piste. The recent snow was accompanied by high winds which stripped lots of ridges and summits bare and worked the snow. The depths are also way below average.
Go out with Wayne and the boys or Easiski or other experts and they will find you wonderful snow and conditions... but it is they who are great not the snow at the mo.
The trust you can place on industry reports is inversely proportional to the amount of snow.
