Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Baggage handling and how to pack?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Excuse my complete ignorance, but I've never flown with ski kit before, I've always driven, so it's never been an issue.

I have a boot bag and a kit bag (no skis, but will be carrying helmet/goggles).

Question is, does the boot bag go as a separate luggage item? And is wrapping the helmet/goggles in clothing sufficient to guard against the knocks that baggage handlers inflict?

For my last trip (8 days) I managed to pack helmet and boots in my main (hard shell) suitcase and the case still weighed less than 20Kgs. I wore my ski jacket and my ski pants went in my carry-on with one change of clothes as well.

Socks and underwear are stuffed into my boots. Helmet is packed with t-shirts. Clothes are rolled rather than folded. Goggles are bagged (in the supplied case/bag) and kept in my ski jacket's goggle pocket.

clara_jo, it depends who you fly with and what their baggage limitations are.

With Ryanair for example you have to pay for each individual item of hold luggage and each bag must weigh less than 15Kg. You also have 10Kg of hand luggage though which has to be within a certain size (and I did see others carrying boot bags as hand luggage).

there was a thread that summarised the allowances... but not sure where to find it now Confused

I usually try to take goggles and helmet in my hand luggage. If the helmet won't fit in the bag you can attach using the strap. Never had any problems with this

I wear my heaviest jacket at check in, that way it isn't included in the hold baggage allowance nor in the hand luggage allowance, of course it usually comes straight back off again for the flight. Goggles inside helmet, pack that with squishy clothes.
I don't use a separate suitcase & boot bag now but have a holdall with boot pockets either end, it can be harder to keep to the 20kg limit doing that though.

I checked with the handling agent for Swiss (because the airline itself said a boot bag would be too big?!) and they said that I'm ok to take my boot bag on as hand baggage as long as I keep it under 8 kg (no problem with that) and it's my only piece of hand luggage. It fits my boots and my helmet (with 2 pairs of goggles inside) plus a few other bits and pieces, so it looks like I'm sorted Smile
