To quote a recent post on the Big Dump 1st-5th Jan?? thread. Where on earth are we going from here? A look at the GFS Max daily temps in the models shows a lowering of temps for a few days and then lots of 6-10°C+ from there onwards. There is still no sign of proper cooling.

chrisb, who knows? However the long term forecast of a very mild winter is coming true and tbh I can't see any change in the models in the available timescales. Just consider how mild it is in the UK at present for an indication of the problem. Sweden anyone? Can't see how anyone can confidently book a holiday ahead at present. The snow that comes in the next two days won't last unless it cools dramatically, and the GFS charts don't show any sign of that.

The GFS ensemble for Geneva is forecasting a temperature drop during today and tomorrow from the current warmth, then close to the seasonal average over the next week. That doesn't sound too bad to me?

rob@rar, agreed the next few days are better but the longer term is still not as it should be. Watching these blasted charts is bad for ones health. Weather please prove me wrong

can be done. my daughter and her boyfriend even enjoyed a couple of hours on the most awful snow ever, yesterday, 'cos of brilliant sunshine and with the forecast new snow over the next few days it should be great. There is nothing very unusual about the temperatures forecast for the next week and the longer range was looking promising for the second half of January. Beyond that even the most complex models are not at all reliable, there are just too many variables, and we could well be looking at an excellent season. There is certainly no rational basis on which to write it off at this stage, any more than there was a rational basis for the euphoria about an early December dump. It's 2 degrees at 1500m here, and dropping. Just as well it's not too cold as my husband had the apartment door off all morning sawing a few millimetres off it, because it was scratching on the floor. If I were sitting in the UK now, trying to plan a holiday, I would feel pretty happy about the prospects for end January/early February.

I don't bother with any forecast more than a week ahead - the FI factor makes it a fairly pointless exercise in my experience.

Looks to have been a reasonable dump in Scotland overnight and it seems to be continuing now :

Its not mild at the moment here in my bit of the UK - whilst I've been away skiing for a week in the dolomites the temperature has been down to -3.4C and the max temperature on my south facing patio was 10.7C, yesterdays max at 6C was around average and it was cold overnight and at midday at the moment my car thermometer is saying its 4.5C
Also the top of Cairngorm is -5C so again a decently low winter temperature!

This year's Alpine season, from Oct 1 to Dec 31, has been below-average for almost everywhere except parts of Switzerland and Italy.
Temps have been above-average.
Many stations have had just 1 major snowfall in 3 months.
It is already Jan and many slopes are green or brown right across the Alps up to 2000m.
Manmade snow is giving a false impression of conditions. Without it, many resorts would be in a right old mess.
Snow and rain is on its way this week. Things are set to improve for some, but not all.

I have just spoken to my colleagues in Les Gets where it is raining at their upper village level. They believe this is falling as snow at the top (2000m+) but agree it's just a bit too warm for snow in the village at the moment. Met Check states temps falling to -5 by this evening, staying low and dropping throughout tomorrow, with associated snowfall. I'll let you know with an on-the-spot report as I get it

Anniepen, It looked like all the snow was washed off Mount Chery today on the webcam

Les Gets looked totally wiped out after all the rain today.

lisach, eh ? Look at the charts, eg.
The thick red line in the middle is the 30 year average, how you can call that model output anything other than average beats me ????

It's now snowing steadily, temperature just below zero at 1500m. If it does this all night the pistes will be 100% improved tomorrow; they were terrible yesterday and not worth thinking about this morning in the rain. But yes, it's not that abnormal. I remember Christmas/New Year 2002/3 when the snow was so bad that my son decided to fly back to work rather than waste money on a ski pass.

Outside our apartment at 1500m we got about 10cm this afternoon, then it stopped, but it is now snowing again and looks like it means it. Fingers crossed. I'm not taking my new snowboard out unless the pistes are covered but if they are, I am such a beginner I only need a few pistes to do all I want to do. I was glad to note that the main meteo specialist on the skipass.com website was citing the Beaufortain, along with the Arly Valley, as likely to be one of the main recipients of the snow forecast for the next few days. Hang in there skinutter, it'll be OK when you get here.

cheers Pam fingers crossed for you and I'll sleep easier now LOL. I also saw on a couple of sites that they said that the prealps and Beaufortain would be on the recieving end of anything white Landi radar shows a mass of precip running through then a gap before the next lot just coming into sight from the west of the radar sweep...Can't wait to pack up and head out now!

As promised above, On the Spot Les Gets Report.......
The rain turned to snow late yesterday afternoon and has continued all night. My colleagues now have around a foot of fresh snow outside their piste-side apartment door. It is still falling, straight down as not much wind in their location, lovely big fat flakes It is also very cold - woo hoo!

skinutter, even if this is the last significant snow for a while it should last some time. We have had over half a metre now and still dumping.

fantastic, on that note i dug out the chains today, i hope we have cause to use them on top of the snow tyres while we are out there too
Are you able to ski back into Bisanne yet? Have they been pisting much today or just letting it fill in before bashing it?
Cheers
David

skinutter, the bisanne side, including Rosieres chair, is closed, and we didn't see any sign of pisting, but we hope it will be open in the morning. The Bisanne lift wasn't open either. We had to put snow chains on top of our four snow tyres to get round to Les Saisies and there were a lot of cars stuck. The snow was very cold and sticky - my daughter had major problems with a snowboard which had had a "summer wax" which would normally have rubbed off quickly, but just stuck to the snow. It's still hammering down and we have had a lot more than forecast by Snow-forecast.com. That was my experience all last season, actually. They under-forecasted the snow as a general rule. I was complete rubbish on my snowboard today; back to skis tomorrow!
