Hello peeps. Just sticking my head briefly above the parapet to say a few things.
1. Happy New Year to all!
2. Unfortunately my feeling about the precipitation this week not being too spectacular (but certainly useful in a few higher places) due to high temps has turned out to look like it'll be true... but...
3. There are VERY positive signs of a big change happening sometime in the not too distant future... The cogs are in motion to move a few bits and pieces of the jigsaw into place that could lead to some serious cold sweeping down into Europe in 10 days to a fortnight... too late for some I know - sorry - maybe it'll happen a little quicker, but even so, second half of Jan onwards should see a return to the kind of weather we hope for. Fingers crossed it carries on developing as it needs to.

Hopefully it isnt TOO much snow to the extent where lifts start getting closed though, ideal situation = snow all night, sun all day. Will it happen? Most likely not...

That's about as confident as you'll get any informed weather watcher to be about what will happen in 10 days time Chris Brookes, . So I reckon that's v good news!

I'm no techie expert - just (as Pam puts it) an "informed weather watcher" who spends a fair bit of time trawling various weather sites every now and then to get an idea of what is happening or likely to happen. Our main problem this winter has been the strong jet stream continually dragging mild air over the UK & Europe... we need something (ideally what's called a "Greenland High", which sends the jet Northwards into frigid air, which then comes down the other side into Europe bringing Arctic temps with it) to disrupt the jet and bring us better conditions for us cold lovers.
There are signs... signs only at present... that the polar vortex (low pressure point on the coldest temps in the polar region) is starting to show signs of shifting to the east where it will benefit us by dragging down cold air, which kicks off the cycle to break this wretched run of mild rubbish we've been seeing... However, a similar sign was showing in early December for this to happen in Mid-December and that never happened, so take it with a pinch of salt. It looks positive for mid-Jan, but that's about all we can say at this point.

Hurrah - I have had a "snow-mail alert" from Snow-forecast - I think this is only the second of the season - usually they come every few days. Samoens 1600 it is say 21cm sun/mon - nice if it happens!

At this stage, it looks like most of the entire Alps will see an average, fresh, cumulative snowfall of 30cm from Mon 1 to Fri 5 Jan.
France and Switzerland will see the most (20 - 60cm).
Austria, Germany and Italy will see the least (10 - 30cm).
Chamonix, Verbier, Les Arcs, Davos-Klosters and the Three Valleys could all get a tasty dump next week (30 - 60cm).
Some of the lower stations below 1500m, particularly in the East, like Saalbach (1000m), Kitzbuehel (800m) and Zell amd See (800m), will see rain mixed in with the snow.
Things can still change, though.

On the way back through France yesterday, there was big storm last night in Laval / Le Mans with about 6 hours of rain, car got a very good wash. So should be on its way across France now. According to the French TV it should get to the alpes on Sunday night or perhaps before.

Above-average temps and a rain-snow level around an unseasonably high 1500m seem to be the order of the day in most stations for the next 2 - 3 weeks.

Looking on the bright side, the warmer temps will help form a long lasting base? Won't they... Or don't you think it'll get cold enough to allow a decent freeze-thaw cycle?

Well.. that certainly didnt happen, snowed throughout the day and night for around 3-4 days... Shame about strong winds but still, skiing in 1m of powder on closed black pistes = awesome.
