...well my much loved and trusty Rossi 9XOs have come to the end of their P-Tex bases. A service last week in Italy revealed the edges beginning to separate from the plastic and a small stone up Le Tour managed to remove 2 inches of "edge base". After 150 days or so I can hardly complain...
More worrying, there are some disconcerting ripples in front of the binding plate just where my last pair broke. I am more than ever convinced there's a design fault...
So what to do now?
Spend all season ski testing?
Buy a pair of piste skis and hire for powder and rando? This currently appeals as I am afraid I spend far too much time on piste and rather fancy going back to slalom skis - after all, they'll work fine off piste anyway.
I just don't know what to do?
The problem being that while I adore deep fluffy powder (and the occasional deep fluffy tour du duvet) I can ski that on most things whereas I find many modern skis disappointing on piste. (I like my skis a little demanding...)

Wouldn't something by Volkl, Stockli or Head be better if you want a demanding ski? I'd have thought AC3s or Stormider XLs might be "up your strasse" (with apologies to Fry and Laurie)

Ooh I'm really upset for you - having to buy new skis - life is hard!
Given your parameters(& opportunities to ski) I'd seriously consider going for 2 pairs - 1 slalom, 1 fat & mounted with freerides e.g. Movements or Black Diamonds etc. If you know anyone going to Whistler they had a large number of last year's Fischer RC SL & GS for Can$299 a pair which seriously tempted me.
I've recently been learning to ski a 100mm waist ski in 3 foot high moguls so maybe that's another option for you!

Arno, true. Found some truly awful stuff last week. Immediate "quiche" alert and "bail piste left".
fatbob, horrible isn't it? I think you're right - or buy piste skis as the daily use and hire/borrow alternates depending on powder conditions. Although, I do also really want to try the Stocklis (not the DPs - which seem to be proliferating everywhere I look).
And Arno, "won't ski themselves" is not necessarily a recommendation, nor is "won't turn without auxiliary engines and external assistance" I want "challenging" and "demanding" with a healthy "rewarding" not just "plain daft"...

David Murdoch, well the one ski of my recommendations that i have skied myself fits that bill i reckon (the legend pro) - i'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a pair to try in chamonix

Arno, I would suspect that the Dynastar test centre up the GMs would have a pair or two. Will give them a bash and see if I can get over my Dynastar antipathy. Will report....
