Update for New Year's Eve. Outlook is for 50-70cm of snow at 2000m in the Northern French Alps, very little of this snow will make it to the Southern Alps or Pyrenees. The snow line will fall from 2000m on Monday to 1600m on Tuesday morning then 1000-700m on Wednesday. The fresh snow will be accompanied by very strong to violent winds from the south-west to west. This will move a lot of snow onto north-east to north slopes to add to existing slabs on west slopes formed before Christmas by the Lombard wind. The existing base is composed of a thick layer of depth hoar. Avalanche risk will rise over the coming days with skier triggered slabs of considerable size likely from the Haute-Savoie through to the north of the Hautes-Alps. Keep a close eye on the Avalanche Bulletins

Thanks for the comments.
I've been up in the Haute-Savoie today. Quite heavy rain, there has been 14.5mm at home over the last 24 hours which will probably translate into around 20, even 30cm in some places such as the glaciers of the Vanoise/Mont Blanc massifs. Wind predominantly from the south-west which has been keeping temperatures high, hence the torrential rain in some resorts which did a lot of damage but there was snow down to 1500/1600m later in the afternoon.
Anyone thinking of going off-piste in the Haute-Savoie, Savoie or Isere tomorrow should take a look at the snow conditions filmed towards the end of the last two video reports. The avalanche risk is HIGH at altitude across the region tomorrow and I expect quite a bit of activity. The Swiss are also posting Considerable risk for the Valais (Verbier etc.). Be careful out there.

It is a briliant sunny day today (central French Alps). Temperatures have finally dipped below freezing even at quite low altitudes. There has been around 40-50cm of fresh snow from 1500 meters with the snowline around 500m. I can hear the shells of the avalancheur at the nearby ski resort blasting away. The conditions above 2000m off piste are very good but also very dangerous. Let's hope the sun doens't encourage too much exhuberance.

Almost inevitably that hope is forlorn. David has just reported the first avalanche death in France this season, occurring at Les Arcs

Where I am in the central French Alps the zero isotherm is at 1700m with light snow from about 1400m. High pressure is still dominating so don't expect much snow 5 - 10cm.
