If you want cheap M&S merino containing thermals did the business for me last year in admitedly not particularly cold conditions but reasonably chilly.

Most decent microfleece's are good... my two favouerites are a Hoglofs micro and an Eider Micro... and for extra warmth add a Icebreaker Merino vest...that should get you through most of what the alpes can throw at you during the day

I'm going to buy some of the Tog24 ones, I'll report back after Feb on what I thought they were like. But I fear this would be a little late for your information. Still, I guess it'd keep the subject open!
