A new ski resort has opened in Krasnoyarsk Territory, Russia, this week, which officials are claiming to be the first Russian resort of world standard. The resort, Bobrovy Log boasts 15 ski tracks of different levels of difficulty and ranging from 400-1,800m in length, two four-seat chair lifts, two restaurants, five bars, a night club, and parking for 500 cars. About 10,000 people attended the opening event....See: http://www.english.newslab.ru/news/207687
Meanwhile leaders of Sochi’s bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games arrived in Brussels yesterday to prepare for their presentation to the 35th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee (EOC), where they were to showcase Sochi’s technical plan for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in a 10-minute presentation.
Shortly after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) named Sochi as a candidate city in June, the Russian Cabinet adopted a program - Development of the City of Sochi as a Mountain-Climatic Resort (2006-2014)” - to develop the area. Roughly 128,000 acres of Sochi's 470,000-acre national park have been identified for development
We have already reported that Greenpeace, other environmentalists and Russian youth movements are unhappy about the plans to host the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Unless im very much mistaken, Krasnoyarsk is absolutely nowhere near Sochi - its about 2000 miles away in Siberia. Lovely city, it is surrounded by hills which im told have excellent skiing in winter. Which is of course about six months of the year

Hi Nick C,
Krasnoyarsk actually already has an airport- the flight time from Moscow is just shy 5 hours via Aeroflot.
Before you book your flight though- it's a very modest sized resort- just over 350 vertical meters of ski terrain. (low elevation- 160m to 515 m- but since it's Siberia snow quality / retention is not a problem!) A comfortably busy day for Bobrovy log should be around 2500 skiers.
Although it may be the first "international" standard ski resort in Russia- Bobrovy Log will not hold that distinction for long. Actually- Psekhako Ridge (Near Sochi) is already complete, and it's a much larger and higher quality resort. It's been built by Gazprom, the world's largest producers of natural gas. Unfortunatly, the electrical power plant for the resort was not completed in time for this season's operation. Psekhako already has fully complete and installed :
1-8 passenger detachable gondola,
1-6 passenger detachable chair,
1-4 passenger detachable chair,
1-4 passenger fixed grip chair,
2 surface platter lifts.
But, since there's no power at the resort this year, the equipement is left sitting in the snow. (actually, the gondola was complete in October 2005, so this will be it's second winter sitting idle.)
The base area has some impressive hotels that are either complete, or close to being complete.
Bobrovy log probably isn't the first "international quality" resort in Russia in any event- Magnitogorsk is already operational in western Siberia, and there are numurous other resorts that have installed new lifts in the past few years.
FYI- Sochi would not host any of the alpine events, it's a seaside resort city on the black sea. A short 45-30 min drive directly inland from Sochi is the mountain town of Krasnaya Polyana, where the existing ski resort "Alpica Service" is located. "Psekhako Ridge" is directly across the valley, while the proposed / under construction "Rosa Khutor" resort is the one that Greenpeace is up in arms about. (Psekhako Ridge is also located in federal "Park" land)
Expect to hear more and more regarding the Sochi bid- it's far stronger than most people are aware of- I for one will not be the least surprised to see it awarded the games in 2014.

Krasnaya Polyana is the favourite resort of Vladimir Putin, the current Russian president. He is a keen skier and one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the Olympic bid.
Sometimes he is so obsessed with skiing that he keeps his meetings in Sochi. Everyone has to travel here instead of Moscow, so he does not want to miss a good day for skiing.
At his younger years he served as a spy in German speaking areas, he skied a lot in the Alps. I saw a memorial in an Austrian mountain hut certifying he slept there for a few days when skiing in that resort.

Now that sounds like the perfect description of a snowhead!

skierguy_75, thanks for a fuller picture of Russian skiing, I see this area getting more busier as global warming keeps the shorting the Euro season.
