Personally, I wouldn't ski at Christmas without positive snow reports and prospects in the 1st/2nd week of December. There are significant risks in booking well ahead for that time.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We go at Xmas every year - normally for a fortnight starting the third week in December. We've never had a snowless Christmas yet (although there have been a few close calls). It's also surprisingly quiet.
The historical snow reports on the SCGB website have all the stats.

Friends of mine often go at Christmas - & it is quite nerve-racking. I get all up-tight for them, and then it dumps the week before they go! You should be fine if you pick a high resort...
Where are you going in Austria?

Have done two christmases - Bulgaria in 96 (I think) and Spanish Pyrenees in 2000.
3 runs open in Bulgaria, Spain was slightly better but still only about 40% of the terrain open. Mind you it did put doen about 30 inches the day before we left

Obergurgl, Austria is pretty reliable for Christmas snow. If all else fails Sölden (glacier) is nearby.

Regularly ski Xmas week....if you're booking early go for a glacier resort....you're garanteed some skiing at least. Try Tignes or Val Thorens both pretty good, avoid Deux Alpes....the glacier skiing is flat as the proverbial pancake and no good for anyone except beginners.

Was at Pas de la casa this Xmas... snow was fantastic. absolutely dumped it down on first day and some of the next... but up until the week we went conditions were looking a bit iffy.
Best to book it as a last minute deal. Check out the snow reports the week or so before xmas and book then.

Saas Fee a possibility as well - we went over New Year this year and snow was good for our week and looked like it had been pretty good over the previous. Also a glacier resort.

don't foprget that snow record notwithstanding, yo;re guaranteed to pay about duoble for the privilege of going away over Christmas, too - and due to the lack of planes on Christmas day, most Christmas holidays this year will be thursday - thursday which may mean extra time off work

This year we booked EasyJet flight to Geneva, EasyCar and B&B in a local town....that way we could drive to & ski different resorts and pick and choose where the snow was best. Worked out lots cheaper than booking a package deal. Worth considering but you need to get in early to book cheap flights!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I've been away at Chrimbo 3 times & always had fantastic snow, in both high & lower resorts.
If you're planning to do a package, check out the dates in the brochure, as Christmas falls on a weekend this year, some companies are doing 5 nights, 9 nights - make it up as you go along....

Put on my skis on Nov 29h forthe first time, this season. Snow was pretty good.
But it does not happen every season.

Thanks guys, don't know what to do now . I'm starting to think we may be better to book a glacier resort (Zell am See or Saas-Fee?) or just book for March instead!!
Only 24 days to go now!
Cathy, BTW we're off to Ischgl - can't wait!

Dont give up mj. Last 3 years we have done first or second week in December. First two years we did Val Thorens. 2001 - notoriously bad year - but Val T was still fine. 2002 - it was amazing. This year - we took La Goldsmith's advice - waited till the last moment - and found that the best snow recorded was in Serre Chevalier - and had a wonderful week, when much of Europe was struggling - but I'm not sure you can leave it that late for the actual Christmas week. If I was to book way in advance I would take a risk on Val T... or as you say - one of the glacier resorts.
