Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Help! Where to go....

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We have had the week before Christmas booked off for months. We have to get what skiing we can now, because we can't go in Jan or Feb.
We really feel we need to book something now before there are no flights left - what's the consensus view on where to go?

My better half refuses to cross the Atlantic, so it has to be Europe.

Our shortlist is
Tignes, Zermatt. It did have Val Thorens as well, but that seems to be worse off than Espace Killy?

I know it's all just guesswork at the moment, but is there somewhere we haven't thought of? Which is likely to have the most open?

Please help - we keep arguing about it and not getting anywhere, we need someone to tell us what to do.

What about March? It's likely to better than December.

Frances, from the webcams, it's snowing at village level in Zermatt now (in a slushy sort of way). In the last couple of weeks there always seem to be people skiing at a few locations on the upper slopes. I'm going there for New Year - hopefully it'll be nicely covered by then!

Frances, AFAIK, right at this moment the largest area open is Ischgl with about 60km.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yup. Almost certainly the case. After 10 March, when the French school hols finish. Far, far, better in every possible way. If you go now it's a case of choosing the least awful snow cover.

Presuming you intend to go for the week commencing 16th dec, I'd strongly recommend packing the bags early then logging on to last minute deals on 13/14/15th based on prices, quality of accomodation and latest snow conditions. A week is a long time in the mountains....

Zorro's got is right... head for Ischgl - I was there in January and the snow was superb. It's also an easy place to get to, so you don't need a package. We flew to Friedrichshaven on Ryanair for £44 return, including taxes and ski carriage! Walk out of the airport, across the carpark and straight onto the train to Landeck - easy. The standard of hotel in the resort is the best I've ever experienced and very good value. We got 9 days skiing for less than it would have cost for 6 days on a package! Haven't checked the snow, but Saas Fee is great as well, and very high altitude, so if anywhere's getting the white stuff that will Smile

Frances, another for your shortlist, Les Deux Alpes seems to have caught a fair bit of snow, see easiski's thread in snow reports. Flights to Grenoble (closer) or Lyon will get you there.

Come to Chamonix and we can all sit in a bar and be miserable about the fact the lifts don't open until 23rd December together!! Crying or Very sad I too booked off the week before christmas ages ago but stupidly booked the skiing holiday as well!! (not much to be miserable about sitting in a bar with fondu really!)

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thanks for all the advice.
The husband had quite some input as well, and after much debate between Deux Alpes, Ischgl & Zermatt we've booked something in Zermatt. Not that hard to get to Saas Fee for the day, and plenty of non-skiing things to do.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Frances, please let us know how it goes. I've booked for Zermatt (Hotel Ambassador) at New Year (for the first time).

There seems to be snow at village level at the moment, but I guess it's pretty thin on the lower slopes.
