Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cairngorm did have a snow making system but not in 2002........

The original set up was a really primitive device which was just a pipe about 65mm diameter which ran between the Sheiling and the car park and had some hydrant type things at approx 75m intervals,,,, I think/seem to remember. I don't ever remember seeing it working but I've heard that it did, badly!

I'm guessing this wouldhave been late 60's early 70's. I'll try to find out more next time I meet some of the old guard up there!

It is quite astounding that Cairngorm does still not have extensive snowmaking facilities today.

I remember it working. It made a terrific shriek and coughed out a bit of ice vertically into the air. I would say I last saw it working in about the mid 70s.

I have also been told about an early attempt at artifical snow making in the Kirkland gulley on Cross fell, in the North Pennines. I seem to remember hearing that there were still some remains of it visible. Might be worth getting some photos if that is true.

'Skiing Archaeology' may soon be the only skiing we have left in England, if climate change contiues to deliver such mild winters. Sad

When I was a kid I seem to remember an attempt to coat a side of a hill in Merethyr Tydfil, South Wales with artificial snow.

Then they covered it in mat went bust and the thing burnt down. Shame. I think Wales will have some nice cruising blue runs when global warming gives way to the next ice age.

All long before I tried the sport ....
