Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

We went to Westendorf with my mum in January, she didn't fancy downhill skiing but did snowshoe walking, toboganning and cross country skiing. Wouldn't have been surprised if she'd gone paragliding...

Dog-sledding, the most fun you can have without a pair of skis on your feet. Very Happy Very Happy

If the weather's that bad you can't ski, then there's really no reason to be out in it. Wind and falling snow are no reasons at all (in my book) to not ski. If you've got virtually zero vis, then find an easy blue and practice your skiing by feel - really improves the reactions - but do keep the speed down. If in a complete whiteout, do try and keep a piste pole or someone else in sight though so you can tell whether you're moving or not (more than once I've thought I was stationary waiting for the rest of the group and seen a piste marker float slowly past Embarassed ). I tried snowblades a couple of times when an early intermediate and they were great fun, and good for getting centred on your skis, but I doubt I'd use them now.

Ice climbing? Ask scarpa about that one.

A couple of years ago we took my non-skiing Mum to La Tania and she had a good time snowshoeing for a day or two, and just walking in normal boots around the snowline for the other days.

there are also often alpine museums in many resorts which have interesting photos and info about the area. I think snowshoeing is one of the best non skiing things to do - go with a guide who should be able to tell you all about the flora and fauna and how the animals live and which tracks are which .... Best one I've been to was in Chamonix.

Yes, ice-climbing with a guide. Cross-country skiing. Snowmobiles (quite a few resorts rent them out - usually with supervision). Ski-bikes, Skating, Curling (not actually done those two), Photography.

Do I need to mention snowballs? Very Happy

Garfield, toboganning we did towards the end of the day - taking a late lift up the mountain and toboganning down. Great fun, definitely more dangerous than skiing! The local tourist office had a good programme of non-downhill skiing things and they were generally free except for the cost of equipment rental.

Ice grottos make an interesting diversion for a short while. There's a nice one in Les Arcs each year.

Not wanting to bring the conversation down too low, but friends did allegedly manage to practise human race continuation in the Super-Morzine bubble once. Took a bit of prep, apparently.

Spent an afternoon toboganning in Zermatt last January, that was great fun. Always wanted to have a go on the skidoo's, but never got round to it. Also been to La Plagne 5 times and wanted to try the bobsleigh, but just never found the time.

Try a tandem paragliding descent from a mountain top (with skis on). You see them offering it by the tops of some of the highest lifts, especially in France. Rather expensive but a great experience.
