Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gloves question

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm thinking of getting new gloves before January. I take Ladies' medium or Mens' small. My current gloves are Zainer gore-tex gloves, but I have found that after a few weeks' use (6 weeks) plus various trips to the big fridge, the padding is getting squished and they aren't as warm as they used to be. I have tried wearing the liners I use in motorcycle/cycling gloves, but they don't really improve things. I have the thumb loop on my Icebreaker engaged, and this helps a bit, but my fingers stay cold.

What I want is something plain (preferably black) and definitely not powder blue or pink! Preferably with a fleecy lining, as well as decent padding and a leather palm. I really don't like Salomon gloves - the lining gets rucked up in them and the ones I had weren't very warm either. I also don't want mitts. I like the look of the new Spyder gloves - has anybody tried these? Any other suggestions for really good very warm gloves that don't look too girly?

]docsquid[/b], I'm after some Pheonix Spirit ones from Santa, plain black. I need XS, and I tried the Spyder ones in small, but they were too big. I didn't think they appeared to be very warm when I tried them on either. They have them in Snow and Rock for £49.99 I think. My favourites were Ami Chaud, but can't find them any more.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but... how do you get rid of that very nasty niff when your gloves are a few weeks old?

I have one pair, really good, leather palm etc. but they are so smelly they have been consigned to 4th on the list emergency wear only - my boots smell better Puzzled

SMALLZOOKEEPER, I would go out and buy some gloves but I'm stuck indoors. Today it is waiting for deliveries, and from tomorrow it will be looking after Mr DS after his operation. Hence the request for recommendations, so when I either order online or do get a few minutes to go out in the next couple of weeks, I can go straight for the best gloves.

Am I allowed a supplementary question Very Happy

Are the Zanier heated gloves any good?

SHello, I'm afraid I wash mine (on the recommended delicates cycle). That gets rid of the pong, but I guess eventually the padding gets less paddy and you end up a bit colder.

I second Stuarth on the Hestra. Great gloves.

I agree with Helen Beaumont. Phoenix Spirit Gore-tex gloves are very good (Snow and Rock sell them). They have leather palms, are black and are very warm and nice-feeling inside.

If they're slightly too big, you could get some glove liners to stop them getting niffy.

I've had Salomon gloves too and had problems with the linings getting all twisted. I complained to Salomon but they just shrugged their shoulders and said 'tough luck!'. rolling eyes

Well, as an update, I managed to get away from home for a bit this morning and went into EB at the Snowdome. They had both Hestra and Phoenix gloves in stock, Ladies and Gents sizes. The only ones that really fitted properly were Gents small Phoenix Ghost Gore-Tex - very good quality and nice and warm and with a nice little lift pass pocket too. The Gents Hestra, and Phoenix Spirit were a bit too large and Ladies Hestra a bit too narrow in the palm - they only had Ladies Small Phoenix Spirit and they were way too small - I suspect the large would just have longer fingers and not a wider palm, like most of the Ladies gloves.

I was pleased to see a good selection, and the ones I've bought are definitely better than my old Zanier ones. Thanks for the advice.
