Right, I'm off to Val Thorens in a week for a season, and I'm just wondering if it is possible to buy SIM cards for cheap mobile networks that will work there.
Also if anyone has recommendations on nice cheap good quality networks (am i asking too much) that will work there it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Just to clarify, you can buy that in Resort, I'm guessing just at a cornershop?

buckers - you'll either need an electrical shop or maybe a tobaconists. It shouldn't be a problem to find somewhere.
Anyone have idea which network is the cheapest for PAYG in France?

A friend who spent last season in La Plagne couldn't seem to get a sim in the resort, so I posted a SFR sim to him. It needeed topping up every 6 months, so he may have to get a new one for this season. The tabacs in the resort do all of the top up vouchers.

I use Orange out here and find it to be ok and reasonable, you can get a sim from Gitem in Morzine but remember and you Buckers to take your passport with you as a register.

Fat-Russ,
good point, I have usually been asked for my passport, but SFR have once accepted my English driving licence as proof of identity.

buckers, I've done a couple of seasons in VT. I don't think there's anywhere in VT that sells the SIM cards, but you can get them at the supermarkets in Moutiers or Albertville. No problems topping up a SIM card in resort. I used Orange.

buckers, .......I checked out call charges, rates etc, for all the French 'Pay-as-you-go' networks last year and they could not match the 'sim4travel' sim card rates. Although I haven't checked this year, I intend to use the same sim this season.

pistenbully, I brought mine at the cingular store at the Gateway Mall in downtown Salt Lake City. I think you can buy them in any cingular store, but would check the website first http://www.cingular.com/ to see if you are able to do this as a tourist. I would assume it would be the same, but it is best to be sure.
I hope you have a nice time and a big snow storm is expected in the next few days, so lots of powder if you like that sort of thing.

you can get them in the tobaconist in Courch but they expire even if you have time left on them so you cant use them next season unless you keep them "live" during the summer

'buckers, 'Joe Mobile is an online only operator run by SFR to compete with Free and other cheap networks run by the major telecoms companies. Have a look at the site here http://www.joemobile.fr/home where there are two offerings, a personal plan which starts at 5 euros but you can add different elements to get what you need. There is also a 20 euro plan which is fairly inclusive including calls to landlines in the UK. It accepts UK bank cards.
If you would like a Sim card to set up and activate before you leave then pm with me with your UK address and I will put one in the UK post to you today and forward to you a link to activation instructions in English. I only have three left which I have under Joe Mobiles recommendation scheme, so please only ask for one if you will definately use it.
