Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just a few questions...

Well my first question, whats everyone's thoughts on this year's racing skis? I haven't skied at all this season (next week!) and i thoroughly want to pick up a new pair of GS skis, but I'm not sure which ones. I like the looks of the new Head Supershape Speed's but I'm still unsure, I've always railed a pair of GS 11s. I'm 6'5 and more or less 200 pounds, any thoughts?

Secondly, this may be a bit random, but what are the different side bebbles good for? Difference between the 1,2,3,4 degree bebbles?

Thanks a lot guys.

yeaitsdave, At a ski test in Les Deux Alpes in early november I turned up at the Elan tent with my new helmet, and despite trying to persuade the man that I was a gentle recreational skier he absolutley refused to let me take anything out but the GSX race ski in 181cm. He thought I wanted 184 but he didnt have any in. I really wanted to try some Magfire (coz my mate had just bought some) but he was having none of it.

I loved skiing on them. Fast, stable, and with shed loaads of grip. I could tell I was only brushing the surface with them, but they made me want to try a bit harder on each run.

I bet they are a dream in the hands of an expert

PDS I am anbout uyour height, plus a few pounds wink

Puzzled - always raced GS11's but don't know the affect of different side angles. Are you trolling us? Twisted Evil

Basically a greater side angle results in a more pointed edge, giving more bite & grip especially on hard race pistes. Higher angles, say 4 or 5 degrees (for v.high end slalom skiers) give great bite but need a lot of maintaining whereas low angles, say 1 or 2 degrees (like many recreational skis) give less bite but are very durable. A 3 degree side edge, IMO, gives excellent grip but with no loss of durability.

I'm sure that you already know that your Atomic's have a 3 degree side angle.

Gracias, I understood the higher the angle, the better the edge hold, but never really understood why that was, somehow it still doesn't quite make sense on how that works

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

yeaitsdave, essentially they create a finer "point" on the edge which will cut into the snow deeper and more quickly. A sharper knife if you like.

Dynastar comp W/C 66 or Nordica GSR W/C have to be the best of the bunch i've tried.

I think the word you're looking for is "bevel". I don't think even U.S. spelling can get that to "bebble"

I liked the Elan's too - although I don't think they had the full-on FIS version at the Mondial. I quite fancy trying Volkl's full-on WC GS ski too.
