Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche hits prominent ski slope in New Zealand

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
An avalanche has swept across a main ski slope at Treble Cone, New Zealand, following heavy snowfalls.

A large search was mounted, using probes, after it was suspected that people had been buried.

It now seems that all have been accounted for.

Reports from snow.co.nz and a later one from CNN.

Update from NZ City news. No-one was hurt. Business as usual in the resort but a review of what happened will take place.

However a wide ranging warning to stay out out many areas of the Southern Alps because of very high avalanche risks

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Assuming that Treble Cone is a conventionally managed ski area, formally distinguising between piste and off-piste, then it seems (from the description 'main slope') that this avalanche swept a marked run that the ski patrol were responsible for securing.

On that basis, I should think the resort management is wiping a substantial amount of cold sweat from its brow.

From the comfort of a typing chair (!) that's all I've got to say about it, until we know more about this unusual incident. I wonder if a publicly published investigation will take place?

A further avalanche has struck the nearby area of Humboldt Mountains, injuring two Japanese, an American, and a local ski guide.

This report from The (Melbourne Australia) Age.

That link needs registration. Here's one from stuff.co.nz on the same incident.

It's strange. I got into the The Age story without registration, then set up the hyperlink, which then demanded registration. It's not the first time this has happened.
Thanks for remedying the problem, Ian!

My pleasure.
Yes repeat visits to some places do seem to trigger a registration request. Have you noticed in your trawls through Google that the Otago Daily Times web site never works ? They had an article about an endurance skiing event that raised loads of money for charity. Never found it anywhere else and couldn't get at it.......... have emailed them to report it.
