"He was actually leading the group" - rather curious as to how he managed to get mislaid then? I wonder what the story is? How hospitable is the area in summer?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

An odd comment as you say Tony. The high mountains are places to be treated with utmost respect at any time of year.

Over the last few days it's been foul, storms, fairly cool and a lot of rain/hail. About the worst time this summer so far to be caught on the hill actually.

The mother and step-father of Blake Hartley, the missing cadet, are now reported to be in Chamonix handing out flyers with his photo. His father fears that he may have been a victim of foul play.

And an update [26 August edit] from The Telegraph.

One month later, and the mystery of this man's disappearance shows no sign of being solved. His poor mother has now distributed cards to truckers passing through Chamonix in the hope that he can be tracked down. She remains convinced that he's still alive.

His mother Sally Perrin makes an appeal for information on the website http://www.blakehartley.com/ , where there is a very full account of events leading up to his disappearance.
Blake's story is in this week's (Sept 25th) edition of "Woman's Own" magazine.

I just had a look on the website, and his mother's account of his disappearance is heart breaking.
She's right, it just doesnt add up.

Having read the story the only thing I can think of (other than his wanting to vanish) would be that he was hit by a motorist who then panicked and hid the body some distance away, the last place they can trace him to was the edge of the road

From that site, here's a photo of Blake Hartley.
If it rings a bell, his family would appreciate any help.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Police divers have made a major search of the Arve river bed at Bonneville yesterday looking for the body of Blake Hartley but without success. Apparently the Gendarmerie have even contacted mediums for their help.
Information about a previous search for Blake in April 2005

You know it makes sense.

The psychics who play on people's grief like this make me really angry.

Reading the story it's pretty obvious what's happened to him, he was drunk enough that he didn't recognise the campsite that he was staying in, he came to some harm when he was climbing around looking for the way back.

Kramer, they're all the same. They prey on people that are desperate for help from any source, then they give those desperate people false hope or comfort. Then there are idiots like Derek Acorah who, surely, cannot believe in their "skills".

Finally the Hartley family have some closure as DNA tests have revealed that a bone found in December 2006 in the Arve river belongs to Blake Hartley. The bone was found by an elderly Frenchman who has spent the last couple of years searching the banks of the river for traces of Blake.

Quite and neatly balances some rude comments made about 'the French' in general in another thread.
