surfski, Galtur is 40km 10 lifts, 10 pistes. Most of the skiing is for beginers/intermediates. Kappl is a similar size.
if you're going in the winter then you'll prob find the Iscghl terrain reasonable large and there's plenty of off-piste if you know where to look (especially above Alp Trida in the top left corner of the ski-map).
At the end of the day, you pay your money and you take your choice. You save €40 by going for the VIP pass over 7 days. Worse case, you can always just use the money you saved to buy a dap pass if you fancy exploring for a day.

I've been to Ischgl 5 or 6 times (going again this weekend) and have never felt the need to head up to the Galtür etc .. keep thinking it would be nice to head up there one day to have a look but never got round to it.
I guess it depends on the price difference between the passes .. if it's more than the cost of a one day pass at Galtür then don't bother and if you're desperate to ski up there then just get a one day pass.

OK thanks for the help and advice. I might give it a miss then or as kamikaze and RichA said, buy a day pass. But i think i will stick with the V.I.P ski pass as its cheaper. I'm going Jan 20th and staying at the Jagerhof Hotel.

Ishgl is my favourite resort in the Alps. We just booked a DIY trip for this Easter - April 4th to 11th. Ryan air flights to Friedrichschafen £50 each, Car Hire £188 between 4 of us for a Pug 407 size car with snow tyres, B&B at Garni Dorfblick where you can ski to the door and 5 mins from the Fimbabahn Gondola at 49 Euros pppn for 7 nts. Thats £345 per person plus a bit of petrol and a return pass for the arlberg tunnel, over Easter, in one of the best resorts in the Alps. To me that sounds like excellent value!!! I can't recommend this place highly enough if you like high mieage on good snow, varied terrain, decent restaurnats on the mountain, cross border skiing into Switzerland for lunch, and German type apres ski which i love. Ninki's Stadl, Nevada Alm. Kitzloch all have a great atmosphere as does the Hotel Elizabeth Bar. This place really does give Stanton a run for its money IMHO. I've been to both several times.

You can upgrade the VIP pass to include a day or two in either Galtur,Kappl or See. The pass is indicated as being 4+2 allowing you to ski 4 days in Ischgl/Samnaun and 2 days in either of the other resorts, alternatively you can split this this to 5 +1 or a full 6 days in Ischgl (although the latter would be a bit pointless). The cost to upgrade is around 10 Euro - 30 odd Euro cheaper than the Silvretta pass.
I can reccomend Galtur just for the fact you seem to have the mountain to yourself and there's some stunning scenery off the back (long drag lift back though) other than that it's not really challenging, Kappl's not bad for a change of scenery and nothing more.
Ischgl itself is awesome both on and off the piste, miles better pisted runs than St Anton and the apres is better too although definately more Germanic.
Trying Saalbach next week, hope it lives up to it's reputation - some snow would be good though.

does anyone know if there is any independent ski schools in ischgl i can only find the official austrian one at the moment and would like to look at some alternatives for private lessons of specific technique courses

As far as I know there's only the one school but they do specialist stuff like off piste technique and bumps. I think they have some sort of ski test centre at Idalp where you can test different kit. Make sure you ask for an English speaking instructor unless you speak good german... a lot of them don't speak much english at all so if I were you I'd pre-book with your requirements a while before you go as the resort is now getting quite a few English speaking visitors with some of the major Brit tour operators going there.
Much of Ischgl is a bit of a monopoly with most things owned by a handful of families who don't take kindly to outsiders coming in and owning property / hotels / businesess / ski schools etc... they're the lucky hill farmers who happened to live on a hill with lots of snow on it when skiing came about, and it's their town and their hill and they're keeping it that way - to be honest I can't blame them - they make an absolute fortune so why give it away to someone else, when they need to recuperate for 3 months in Mauritius after a long hard ski season!!!!

It's a wicked resort with loads of off piste if you look for it, and not a lot of people playing in it. And the apres is banging!!!

best thing is normal lessons dont seem to start until 10.30 so should be quiet for first hour(maybe cause of that banging apres)

Neilski, Austrians like cash... hotels, ski schools, bars everyone... keeps that nasty tax man at bay enabling summer to be spent revelling in luxury on a beach somewhere after a long hard season taking cash of tourists in that horrible, cold, snowy mountain range.
You'll love ischgl, it's a birlliant resort, but please don't tell everyone when you get back cos its a secret!!! I'm there at Easter for a week... tick... tock.. tick.. tock.... got to put up with a long weekend in Kitz or Saalbach first though, depending on which has any snow on Feb 3rd!!!

Can anyone recommend a place to rent skiing gear in Ischgl (good selection-service/price ratio)? Are there options to rent ski in Ischgl and turn them back in in "partner" resorts: Samnaun, See, Kappl or Galtur?

Hardly a secret .
Sorry to say over the years the 4 local families who own the whole town has completley trashed the place with over development in town, & in the Valley. Defistated most of the Off-Piste (now served with lifts).
In fact theres not one single private house left in the Town.
OK its a party town & allways has been since the first lift went up. I think to many Apres bars, clubs is Overkill .

stanton, "Secret" was tongue in cheek... to be fair it was a secret to the brits until a couple of years ago. Only Inghams went there til all the other TO's finally jumped on the bandwagon and started managing to secure rooms.
I don't think its over developed particularly. The vast majority has been in a sympathetic style and low rise, and the towns still not bad to look at. There are private house, off the main drag. A lot let rooms to tourists.
Theres still loads of off piste but you have to know where it is. The big difference between Ishcgl and say Verbier or St Anton is that in those places (which I also love by the way) you have to virtually camp out over night in anticipation of fresh snow to get first tracks as everyone in resort is after it. In Ischgl people either dont care, cant ski it anyway or can;t get out of bed due to partying too hard, so you can have it all to yourself until 11am!!!
The bars and clubs satisfy the demand of Ischgls visitors. Nothing wrong with that. There are quiet sohpisticated places too... again, if you know where to look. Personally I love the place and try to go every other year - and never tire of it. Don't think my liver could take a whole season there though!!! Or St Anton or Verbier for that matter!!!

i am going with my two sons 17 and 20 and their friend 20
we will sample some of the wild apres early on but then could do with something a bit more chilled later on as we will be getting up early to get those first tracks
we are staying at the hotel garni ida which is a b&b on the edge of town i think

I have to say your experiences of Ischgl started well before my own. It's only in this millenium I've discovoured the place, and I'm glad I did!!! Even if they have rebuilt it, it's pretty sympathetic architecturally in the main. I don;t really see that theres a big difference between a private house and a private house registered as a business for tax reasons if there's financial gain for the owner from the government in doing so, and in any event, in my opinion it doesn't detract from the holiday experience as a lot of the buildings look like private houses any way. Lucky individauls finding out that the land their modest house is built on is worth a fortune, selling it, and building a big new place out of town is not confined to Ishgl.... it's rife all over the world. In Ischgl they happen to be lucky farmers!!
In my experience it's still a very german oriented town and thats one of the endearing features for me. I speak a little german, enough to get by, and I like the fact that a lot of Brits may find it too "Germanic" - they can always go to The Three Valleys or Val D'Isere if they prefer "British" Resorts and English as the predominant language  I hate going somewhere on holiday, summer or winter, and finding out that 60% or more of the people are Brits, and that all the food, drink, pubs, and everything else are geared for the British market, so in this regard Ischgl suits me just fine, and I'm only sad that more and more tour UK operators are managing to secure beds there each year. If it gets too British I mayhave to find soemwhere else..... Solden maybe, or Obertauern, although our tour ops are invading there now as well!! If only Garmish Partenkirchen got more snow!!!!
