Poster: A snowHead

Anyone done it? I know most people will say don't do it and take them to a shop to fit them but I like to do things myself and figure if I measure twice and drill once it should be straight forward enough. I've practiced by fitting the bindings to a piece of wood and it all seemed to work ok with the boot size adjustment ending up mid-limit. I might still end up getting a shop to do it but am interested in your experiences.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes I've done it with ski touring bindings. Like a lot of ski stuff it is not THAT difficult but dressed up as a black art. You should be able to do a better job than a shop skiman with a jig if you take care (I always find jig mounted skis bindings a bit off center).
I would advise buying a new 3.5 mm high quality self centering drill bit. Use a powerful battery drill - less chance of whizzing straight through the ski compared to a mains power drill.
You will need to mark an accurate center line. Then line up where your bindings will go using the ski and boot center mark. Mark with a thin felt tip where the font screw holes will go, with a square edge mark a line at right angles cross the two skis (not as easy as I make it sound as the edge of your skis are not straight!).
Now you need to decide where to drill the holes for the front binding. You could make a template with the binding by felt tiping holes, mark a center line and scotch this to the ski center line. That's what I did. Repeat for the heel. (you may be able to download a template from the manufacturer's website)
You need to wrap the drill bit with duct tape to stop drilling too far, usually about a cm will do. Fill the holes with slow setting expoxy before tightening the bindings. You need to make sure the bindings are flat on the skis without overtorquing the screws.

Thanks for that Tomsk, very interesting and informative. I don't suppose you have a similar link for Rossignol bindings?
Davidof, I thought it would be possible with a bit of time and care and research to understand the black art of mounting bindings.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've mounted my own alpine bindings before. It was easy.
(did I mention that I used to have a part-time job as a ski tech, so had all the gear? )

Did it a few times when I was 16, a scary 24 years ago. Not too hard really. Although it was more of a case of nailing the boots to the skis...
