Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pistes: it is worth visiting Zauchensee and Wagrain-Alpendorf in the neighbourhood. Ski buses run to both resorts.
My favourite pistes in Flachau are on the Wagrain side, perfect red pistes to start the day.
No draglifts in Flachau (only for ski schols), only chairs!

We live in Radstadt, which is just round the corner from Flachau. We love the Musistatl. It is a great traditional Austrian bar/restaurant with great bands playing regularly. Fire and Ice night club is pretty busy for the young at heart. If you have kids there is a great little pizzeria/restaurant that has a padded cell in the basement with climbing frames and things.... or if you fancy a flutter, here in Radstadt we have a casino...

nickH, the ski transport is very good. There are half hourly skibus leaving from the town centre and they go to Schladming 30 mins, Flachau 15 mins, Zauchensee 25 mins. Ski Amade is so huge - getting to Maria Alm might be chalenging by buses as its right at the other end of the network. I drove to Muehlbach last weekend and that took 30 mins. Not sure about the Gasteins - they take a while to drive. I will look into it for you.

You can also take a bus to Obertaurn but you would have to buy a day ski pass as it isnt on Ski Amade.

Getting from Salzburg is easy too - we have found a travel shop in town that do transfers by coach for €40 and their baggage allowance is really good (far exceeds Ryanairs allowance) and ski boots/ski too.

If ever you fancy another trip - check us out as if we are quiet we will come up with a deal for solos.

Is there a regional ticket available in Flachau that includes Obertauern? In Obertauern you can buy a ticket that includes the Ski Amade.

Thanks flangesax, very helpful . I am actually staying in Flachau, would the salzburg link you recommend go there ? as I'm overnighting In salzburg I was thinking of the train to your neck of the woods , Radstadt, then bus to Flachau, but a straight transfer would be preferable.

nickH, I dont think they stop at Flachau - here is the link

http://www.reisen-habersatter.at/transfer-en.php

If you wanted a skipass that includes Obertaurn you would have to buy the Salzburg Super Ski card - which overs all of Salzburgerland. Here is the link

http://www.salzburgerland.com/eng/id/8884/direktlink.html

Otherwise you would buy a day pass for Obertaurn. Obertaurn only has its own pass as its a purpose built resort in the middle of no-where.

...........wish I could type as fast as I can hit the ' submit ' button !!

Thanks again kkip & fsax - from the links it looks as though the train requires changes/walks/buses etc whilst the coach people claim to stop at flachau ( which I'll now try to confirm ) in which case no contest. If any other handy hints come to mind I'd love to hear them , meanwhile prey for snow !

cheers

nickH, there will be no problem with snow. Flachau has announced that they spent 4 million Euros to buy new snowguns, now they have 140 snowguns total.
They claim that from this season 100% of their slopes can be covered with artifical snow.

......... that's seriously good news, will try not to think too hard on environmental cost of running that lot !!
You seem to know the area well, how do you think it rates compares to other areas within an hour or two of salzburg ? I've so far tried both saalbach & kitzbuhel ( I'm a confident, intermediate piste skier - regrettably not got into the offf-piste yet ).
Any other recommendations?

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Saalbach can be a good resort to compare, since you have been there and I have been there. (five times so far)
Basically, you can expect the same quality of skiing here or any place in the Ski Amade as in Saalbach, of course in smaller scale.
You find excellent piste preparation here, modern lifts, constant snowmaking, good restaurants on slopes, good bus service just like in Saalbach.

By smaller scale I mean, you do not find 200 km connected runs here, Flachau offers shorter pistes and probably night life is not that active.
To me piste grading seems a bit different. Some red pistes here might be rated only 'dark blue' in Saalbach.

The only thing I dislike about Flachau is the poor quality piste map, and indicating piste numbers on the slope. Luckily, it is not a huge resort, after one day you know the whole area by heart. Interesting, other resorts linked to Flachau clearly number their pistes both on the map and on the slopes.

All in all, I think Flachau and the resorts nearby is a good choice if you want intermediate pistes, less draglifts, and want to enjoy a typical Austrian ski holiday.

thanks , as you've gathered I do like intermediate, good mileage & Austrian for a good january ski holiday ( though I have had good ones elsewhere) & I think for well-linked pistes & good mileage, saalbach takes some beating, but having been there 3 times myself I fancied a change . I'll definately follow your suggestions of Zauchensee & Wagrain & if Schladming is only a shortish bus ride away then I might well explore there as well.

cheers

Schladming area covers four mountains (Reiteralm-Hochwurzen-Planai-Hauser Kaibling). For a day trip, it is probably enough to focus on Planai and Hauser Kaibling.
Planai seemed to me a bit more crowded and the pistes in Hauser looks more challenging. The connecting piste from Hauser to Planai is rather flat.
World Cup and other races are held here at the end of January. Check the dates, some pistes are closed, and crowd is expected.
