Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saalbach -- any good?

 Poster: A snowHead

Has anyone been to Saalbach, Austria? Any good? What is the skiing like? Lift system? Skibus service? Nightlife? Restaurants?

We are a mixed group of intermediates and advanced.

Thanks in advance.

It's a great intermediate resort with very lively apres ski and 200km of linked piste. Do a search, there's lots of information on Saalbach here.

Whitegold, For confident 2nd weekers to advanced intermediates who believe in having as much fun off the piste as they have on it, Saalbach is probably as good a resort as any. There's a lack of variety for nervous beginners, and some could argue there's a lack of expert terrain. However, in terms of the latter, the North Face of the Zwolferkogel is pretty difficult piste, and if the snow's good, there's plenty of off piste to expore. Nightlife and lift-system is as good as anywhere (although some other Austrian resorts like Iscghl and Soelden prob match it). There's a regular free bus service up and down the valley. Wide range of reasonably priced restaurants. Unlike somewhere like the 3V where you can pay €8 for a beer, expect to pay no more than UK pub prices (even on the mountain). Went there 2 years ago, and going back this year.

Don't go at Easter and expect to find anywhere to eat!! Even the pizzeria said "sorry, but we only do ice cream"!!

Thanks for the replies.

I just booked a week in Saalbach for early Jan. £230 for half-board hotel + flight + tranfer. Monster bargain Smile

Whitegold, that is a bargain as Saalbach hotel costs can be quite steep. It's a great resort, it has pretty much everything an intermediate skier with an appetite for apres ski could ask for!

Would second that, a great deal & a great resort - I've been 3 times in the last 6 years , really enjoyed it each time & prefer it to a number of other resorts I've been to. A number of good runs - the run over to Leogang is particularly nice. For apres -ski, a number of places, but don't miss the 'goatsstall' just above the reiterkogelbahn gondola station near the bottom of pistes 32a/27a/33a - real dancing- on- the- table- in- your- ski boots atmosphere ( inside & out) & well worth keeping an eye on those decending the last 50 metres after a few to many - great entertainment !
enjoy !!

Cathy -- Staying at the Austria Hotel. It is not in a perfect location. It is some way outside the main towns and it looks like there might be some waiting for skibuses. But at £230 HB, we're willing to put up with that.

I gather Saalbach is good to ski, stay and party in, so defo looking forward to it.

As an aside, the experience of booking the vacation was not pleasant. Online tour-operator websites are rubbish. Very user-unfriendly. Their offline phone operations are even worse. Staffed by couldn't-care-less morons. Of 20+ tour operators, resellers and aggregators, Panorama and Thomson were the only brands I would recommend.
