Like it - though it's a while since I self-catered - "self-catering" became "eating out"
Remembering back, it seems in some ways a shame to isolate one's self from local life via the supermarket, fromagerie, etc, though. But I can see it removes the hassle of shopping when you come back to your pit near dead from slopes - and the bottom-of-the-hill bar.

Yeah - I enjoy sniffing around cheese shops and delicatessens.
Less of a fan of queuing up for a crate of Krony, some cereal and milk though!
I wonder what their margins are....

I've always preferred the idea of supermarket trollies with skis instead of wheels. Whilst I can see the appeal of a Tesco (sorry Chaletfood) van buzzing around Meribel it does seem to detract from the 'get away from it all' philosophy of going on holiday.
This business is obviously the product of genius minds, geared to the 21st century philosophy of ordering bog rolls and ready-made cheese fondue (not necessarily related) in bulk over the internet for convenient home delivery at your chalet door.
I wish the enterprise every success, and trust that it will include morning delivery of the Daily Mail, Marmite, Horlicks and other English favourites.

I wish they did it in Andorra- 5 bloomin supermarkets I had to go to to find bread and milk! all they had was booze and ciggies! Id definately use them at the start of the holiday for all the basics

They'd need to be a bit more adventurous for veggies before I'd book up....1 x tomato & mushroom sauce & rice, 1 x tomato sauce & pasta, 1 x veggie steak (whats that??)....bit heavy on the tomato sauce for me!! Then again I like exploring French resorts trying to find a veggie option....

homphomp, I think it's a steak cut from a freshly-slaughtered organically-reared quorn. Possibly a rump. As a fellow veggie I agree (if this is what you're arguing) that veggies should not be offered steaks.
Next they'll be offering vegetarian legs.

David Goldsmith, I'm a veggie mainly because I can't stand the taste, smell or texture of meat or fish.....I hate "pretend" meat even more!!

Do you find in french ski resorts, as veggies, you are restricted to pasta (or cheese fondu...)? I am keen to add a nice veggy dish to my menu in the bar, but being a carnivore my imagination on veggy food is limited to, erm, mashed potato...
What would veggies like to see on a menu (say as a veggy special every day)?

flying_squirrel, Pasta, pizza, omelette....that's about your lot!
Veggie chillie & rice is a nice warming dish you could serve up....yum! Similarly veggie curry is always popular. Personnaly I love it when I find a really good ratatouille on offer either on a jacket spud or again with rice. Nice French options that are around include Croute Montangard which I think is fantastic....I'd also love to be able to get my hands on a veggie version of Tartiflette...onions, potato, cheese - fantastic combination!

Veggy tartiflette - like it! Dead easy to do as well.
Whats croute montangard?

flying_squirrel, whatever you do don't offer me 'vegetarian squirrel'.
Like homphomp, I don't like quorn etc. masquerading as meat. Mash is actually very nice if layered on top of a vegetarian shepherd's pie.
The best source for ideas would be the many veggie cookbooks around. Experiment a bit and you'll be surprised how many delicious vegetarian dishes can be created. Vegetables make excellent curries - you could pre-prepare the sauce in bulk and steam the vegetables as required. Many favourite soups - french onion, tomato, potato and leek, carrot and corriander etc. - can be made with a vegetarian stock. Maybe add a little vegetarian soy sauce to boost flavour where necessary.
Finally, pasta is always an excellent base for vegetarian dishes. And, of course, a pizza oven can be busy turning out veggie and non-veggie favourites. Where's your bar?

flying_squirrel, Basically a massive piece of cheese on toast! Big crusty lump of traditional mountain bread topped with yummy cheesy stuff....no idea what's in it but there's definitely a bit of mustard...serve with salade verte with lots of vinagrette to dip left over crusts in....lovely! I've only ever seen it in some of the less well know resorts.

BTW, you need to be careful with cheese. Many veggies insist on cheese that does not contain rennet, which is effectively meat rather than dairy.

David Goldsmith, True.....but lots will compromise when the alternative is picking lardons out of your salad!

David Goldsmith, good tips. I'll do some experimenting in the autumn. Good veggy soup always a winner, you're right. (I'm in Peisey-Vallandry by the way). No room in the (tiny) kitchen for a pizza over, which is a big shame.
homphomp, sounds tasty!

flying_squirrel, Found a recipe for the Croute on the web (it does include lardons....but none of the versions I've eaten have them on!):
Take stale bread and rub with garlic, soak in dry Savoie wine, top with Abondance cheese and bake in the oven. For the carniverous amongst us just add a layer of lardons between the wine soaked bread and the cheese. I imagine this would work just as well if finished off under a grill?
That said I'm sure the one's I've eaten contained a bit of mustard....unless my taste buds were deceiving me! And they weren't stale bread either just the very dry traditional mountain stuff as opposed to left over baguette.
