Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You can get a train to Zell am See, and then a bus from there to Kaprun.

Rent a car! Use ryanair or www.holidayautos.com - they often come the cheapest...
It is often the best way as then you can get around the resorts. Don't panic abut the roads, they are all cleared every day!
If you need more info just let me know cos we have rented loads of times and now live in Austria!

geoffknight, Obertauern usually opens in Nov and there is a shuttle from Salzburg at €39 return. I don't know exactly when it opens this month but check on their website.

geoffknight,
The snow gods are teasing us at the moment. It goes cold and snows then it is unusually warm. The freezing level has been above 3000m so even Kaprun has suffered. On Monday Obertauern had nearly 1 metre of fresh snow, the warm wether means it's down to around 60 cm or less now.

If I was you I'd book the flight but decide on which resort last minute depending on snow. If it remains warm then Kaprun is your best bet near Salzburg.

Looking at the Webcam, that 40cms at lower level looks a tad optimistic.
Would recommend Obertauern though.
