Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche probe length ?

Powderhound, agreed; I'm advocating that shovelling technique is more important than probe length

taemo,

If you're worried about having a metal handle and shovel blade in your backpack. Pack them the furthest away from your back with soft bits next to your back. My backpack has a sleeve next to my back for a camelback type 2 litre drinks bladder, then I have goggles and a fleece, then the shovel.

Have a great time.

Patch, I'm with you! So is my wife who ditched the probe and the shovel and dug with her hands to get me out last time - big blocks of snow move more easily that way.

welshflyer, camelbak next to your back is not always the best idea, especially when it is cold and the water cools down your kidneys and lower back muscles... A decent pack will insulate the water from the back pad - presumably yours does this. I have a couple of pre-camelbak daysacks that have a thin back panel and it has caused me grief in the past.

I have a mate who wore a separate camelbak-pack between his daysack and his back. the water didn't freeze but he ended up with regular back pains.

Powderhound, Thats really interesting about the camelback, mine does have "some" insulation between the water and my back, but as its not a "proper" camelback it aint great. I do sometimes feel its cold. Worse of all the tube has bloody frozen by then so its all a bit pointless.

Im thinking about either :

or

maybe this but its getting bloody expensive!

Powderhound,

Yes the drinking bladder is well insulated and doesn't freeze and the tube is also insulated. I just have to remember to empty the mouthpiece/drink valve to stop that freezing.

taemo, welshflyer, Bursting it is not much fun either - invariably it ends up dripping down the back of your legs and beating the water-proof properties of goretex. All very unpleasant...

Those do look expensive but good makes are. I use an ABS. The new models are superb - unfortunately I bought mine before they had finished developing the backpack element. Still good though.

I bought from the Escape line...

I put the drink system bladder into a poly bag and then into the back pack. We'v strayed off topic here.

welshflyer, All good info tho Smile

Powderhound, ABS is defiantly the ultimate, but I just cant justify it for 1 week a year and possible 1 maybe 2 days (intermittently) spent off-piste in the week/weekends im away.

I just need to start to face up to the responsibility of "nipping" off-piste with out anything at all.

Would be interesting to poll how many people are in the same position, sking once or twice a year with a large mixed group, love to nip off-piste & generally head off with a
guide for a day or morning. How many carry all the time?

Anyway, think I have made my choice. Separate probe ~2m, BCA shovel, Spine protected backpack & a pieps. Will definitely be helping the economy with that lot! (x2 for my mate!)

Cheers all Laughing

taemo, I have just baught a Venom pack, It had been lying around at the Cotswolds 'rock bottom'store in Betws y Coed for months, it was priced as a £45 sale item, and after umming and arring for a month I though what the heck just buy it, its cheap anyway, I got to the till and it had been reduced agin to £37!!

I have found that with some carefull packing I can get a mixture of kit in it dpending on what Im up to, remember though its not a day trip sack, more an off-piste but not far from help/slopes kind of pack and its a small volume.

Things that it can carry easily, BCA tour shovel/probe, pair of skins, small camera, repair kit, 1/2 lt flask /bladder, spare pair gloves, shades, goggles, wax and small sunscreen. If I had to take a jacket off and stash it it would not fit.

If I wanted to carry my nikon D70 in its slim fit case, then the shovel would need to be strapped on to the outside as it just wouldnt fit.

taemo, Glad you are learning now, before you become a statistic.
My probe is 2.4m but my wife's was a 2.1m lightweight one, perhaps I should have thought about this earlier rolling eyes
