Immediate family are all (fortunately) converts. They do wonder why I want to 'chat' to a bunch of 'internet geeks' though

My mates think it's good to have a hobby and past time, just that I've seemed to pick an expensive one! My family on the other hand don't seem to understand why I love skiing so much, in fact my dad frowns when I even mention skiing, skiing holidays and dry slope; I think he sees it as a waste of time and money - which could be better used if saved, and if i concentrated on my career instead - I guess it's a generation thing.

Markus, I had a rather stormy start to my ski career which was interrupted by two huge injuries, so for a while I was terrified of skiing, and couldn't understand why Mr Docsquid loved it so much. I was willing to try because he was such a ski addict, but I could never see myself enjoying it, just tolerating it. Every time I got off the lift I thought I was going to die, or at least suffer a lot of pain.
Then last year everything changed. I now look forward to the winter where I previously hated it, and absolutely love skiing. None of the rest of the family can understand why we want to take all our holidays in the winter, and think we are quite mad spending money to go somewhere even colder than the UK! We spend the winter planning and going on ski trips and the summer getting a fix at the Snowdome.
So to some extent I can understand where both types come from. I'm a definite convert 'though.

Well, after all, life has got to be FOR something. Clearly the answer is skiing.

Heh, point taken, I think it's more to do with how people perceive the sport; ultimately some people would prefer sitting by a pool for a week, whereas I like the excitement and rush of skiing and the apres-ski.

My wife puts up with it, or I threaten to have a mid life crisis involving chasing young women.

My mother used to ski and understands it. My wife accepts it (as long as I only go away a maximum of 3 weeks) but gets annoyed if I talk about it too much. My ski magazines and videos she calls my pornography collection. I don't think she realises quite how much time I "waste" on here.

Although the wife skis and enjoys it even she seems to think I'm obsessed with skiing. I also get a bit of a ribbing for spending time on here and no one at work can understand why I don't take summer holidays.
My family just smile politely whilst nodding to each other in a knowing way as if the men in white coats will knock on the door at any moment...

My family don't see the point and think I'm a ski bore, as do a lot of my colleagues. However, I have a loyal circle of friends who are all ski mad like me.

My family don't understand it at all and look bemused when I start planning trips in November...they don't "get" why I just don't go to Spain or South of France like "everybody else". I haven't told them yet how much my gear cost either!

I guess I'm fairly lucky, my family got me into skiing so understand the obsession while about 50% of the people I work with ski as well, we've spent the last month comparing holidays and there's talk of organising a lab ski trip which would be pretty cool.

Very similar to SHello, but my skiing friends have taken to calling me Tigger, because I bounce with excitement at the first sign of snow
Still not sure whether to be offended or not!

got into skiing only five years ago after drinking too much on new years day and agreeing to take a family holiday. Have now spent about 12 weeks skiing mostly with the wife and kids. Kids love it (already far better than me) wife tolerates it so looking to get her more involved next year perhaps as part of a womens only ski lessons. All through the summer the rest of office and friends are talking about their summer holidays but all I can contribute is how long to go before the snow arrives. To think I used to be just as daft about golf.

An addiction is something that ends up preoccupying you.
It gives you a high when you are indulging yourself in it.
You look forward to having your next high.
As time goes by you feel the need to get the high more and more often.
And in this case it involves tons of white powder.
Yeah... it's an addiction.
One of the ways to help cure yourself is to talk to fellow addicts about it - but this does not seem to be working at present.
My family and friends think it's starnge spending so much time on an internet forum too... but as for booking annual leave to go on holiday with a load of fellow addicts, they think that is REALLY strange.
