Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A Tignes update from PG at mysnowsports:

Quote:
Pretty grim conditions up there this morning. Daughter's group got as far as the funicular down at Val Claret, but turned back when they heard from another Les Arcs group already training - apparently the wind was so strong that the cablecar was out of action, and there were half hour queues for the drag. While skiers were waiting to go up they were all lying down in an attempt to escape the full force of the gusts, it was that bad! (Would have made an interesting photo...)

Chris Brookes, I think it was pretty nice in Tignes earlier in the week. Fair amount of snow after after the weekend, and pleasant weather. Today looked like it was only spoiled by very strong winds.

Stowe is looking good up high. Another month and it should be looking good down low too!

Vosges (doesn't count to some) has no snow yet, but it's on the way!

cathy, me too, rather obsessively! I don't know whether the mental image of lots of junior racers lying on the snow to keep out of the wind is funny or scary Wink

Yep - and it was one hell of a storm. Looks like the high winds have damaged the Heriot Watt AWS at the summit aswell. Had a rather scary journey to Huntly for the HNSC club training night last night - just avoiding fallen trees.

The same system brought snow to parts of Finland too. Looks like a similar one coming through first half of next week with some pretty strong northerlies (http://meteonet.nl/aktueel/brackall.htm). Worth keeping an eye on.

At the very least this'll hopefully help to start chilling the ground - at best we could have another chance of an early season ski on the Gorm - nice one Very Happy

Whatever happens it's great to see the first snow of the year in the highlands Very Happy

what are people's general thoughts about the snow forecast for the months ahead?

Given this unseasonably warm autumn and the fact that el Nino has reappeared, what are the omens for the season?

Do I need to consult Mystic Meg or some other reliable reader of runes\teabags\tree rings\the Beano?

zippy, I thought "the Omen" was re-released last year? Did I miss something? Not wanting to be too facetious...honest...

At some levels at times there is likely to be a mix of sunshine, wind, rain, snow, hail, sleet and fog. Some resorts will have a bumper season, at least some of the time. Some will have the best/worst* season in living memory (as far back as last year anyway). And most skiers will form firm lifetime sweeping opinions on a resorts "snowiness" based on effectively a single observation.

So business much as usual really.

^ Good old Wikipedia, I might have guessed there'd be something there - thanks Ronald.

Reading that would I be correct in presuming the main affect (from the skiing perspective) is on temperatures in North America? I can't see any mentions of any affect in Europe.
