Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I have booked accomodation in Courmayeur, but have not yet booked flights.....

Which is the best airport for getting there on PT and therefore not having to bother with car hire? Geneva? Turin? One of the Milan airports? Have you any experience? Know of any good websites?

Thanks in advance for your help snowHead snowHead !

I haven't actually done this, but looked into it once, and found that much the easiest way was to book a transfer. I got a price from these guys that seemed quite reasonable:

This was from Geneva, which is apparently cheaper than Turin, even though you have to go through the tunnel.

There is supposed to be a bus from Geneva airport, though I couldn't find out much about it when I looked.

You could always get the bus to Chamonix and get the Aiguille du Midi over to Courmayeur!
Very Happy wink

You can get a bus direct from Turin, Milan and Geneva to Courmayeur, but depending on time of travel, you might need to change at Aosta (from Milan or Turin) or Chamonix (Geneva).
There are trains to Aosta (from Italy), and on as far as Pre St. Didier which is just a few miles down the valley from Courmayeur, and regular buses between the two.

Buses: http://www.savda.it/orari_tariffe.htm (http://www.savda.com/orari_tariffe.htm I think there's no difference)
Trains: http://www.trenitalia.com/

You could get a taxi from Chamonix (not sure of price).

NB the site's changed a bit since I last went. If you click on "Info", you'll see a section with links to bus & rail timetables, too.

The two heaviest dumps I've seen there were Christmas and Easter. In fact, from what I can gather, it tends to do better late season than early.

Not especially, though it may be the one may parents stayed at recently, in which case they liked it. It's been a few years since I've been to Courmayeur, but I think it's very close to the main lift and the town centre (also being at the same end as Bar Roma). Should get the late afternoon sun as well, which some parts of the town don't.

Incidentally, if you aim to get to Pré Saint Didier, St Martin, or Chamonix and change, it may be worth contacting the hotel about the last leg. They may be able to give you an idea of taxi cost and arrange one for you.

Cheers, skanky, you are a gent and a scholar. Hopefully I will be able to do the Vallee Blanche at long last!

the ice perv, good luck with that. I've tried to do it three times and only managed once. One failure was bad weather, and the other was dangerous snow (I never worked out whether he meant not enough, or actually avalanche danger, or both).

A few things from memory that may be worth checking out (I accept no responsibility for anything that's changed):

1) There's a bar at the far end of the pedestrianised area (mainly Via Roma) from your hotel, on the right as you walk down it, that has a lot of stuff on the walls of the old guides from the area.

2) The "rusty tools". Chocolate tools that look like rusty iron that you can buy from some of the shops.

3) The Alpine musuem, by the church.

4) K2 Pizzeria (best pizzas I've had but then I know the owners). The father of the owners took part in (the first?) ascent of K2. (http://www.regione.vda.it/turismo/newvisualizza_e.asp?pk=2091&ts=ristorante). A long walk or a taxi ride though.

5) La Maison de Filippo (http://www.lamaison.com/index_en.html). Not a cheap meal, but everything on that menu is offered and can be sampled - don't go mad early on. Again will require a taxi and should be pre-booked.

The shops close in the afternoon and re-open again late afternoon, early evening so can be visited without impacting on skiing.
