Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Price raise at Profeet

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
FYI i just booked a fitting at Profeet in London and noticed a big price change.

I had a look at their site a few months ago and callled to book but was told to wait until the new models came out this month. Not sure waiting was such a good idea as they have jacked up their fees to £119 from £99.

also noticed the boots i was interested in last month have all gone up in price.

Are these guys worth it??

If they get it right they are. I've seen good work come out of there. Not sure whether it's worth paying that kinda money, try Lockwoods. Little Angel

I'd certainly hope not but it was a question with a winky smiley at the end, not a statement.

I paid £99 a couple of years ago for a fitting so the prices have been steady for some time. Breaking it down to cost per hour: you could be there for three hours or so initially and it includes a follow up visit to tweak the boots.

In any case the point is to have the boots fitted properly and if I have that then it's worth it.

skimottaret, If ya wanna play you gotta pay.

Nearly half of that cost is for footbeds. You'll be there for about 2.5 hrs so that's under £30 per hour inc VAT for a personal fitting service from a qualified & experienced fitter. As boots are the most important piece of skiing kit I think it's money well spent.

I just joined snowheads this week so thanks to everyone for all the feedback(and have changed my username so as not to offend)

It sounds as though they know there stuff but charge when others dont..... I want new boots and beds as well as new beds for my exhisting 7 year old pair. have 12.5 ultra narrow A or B width so fitting has been a problem in the past.

what would a fair price be for a second set of beds for the old boots??

any good fitters near essex? leamington spa is a bit of a trek....

cathy, I think you are right after re reading this. i had taken the "Do you think this underhand manner is how i would approach marketting my business?" as being aimed at me for marketing my flat by using my website name as my username here. just thought i would change to avoid that in the future.

scottp,

I reckon Smallzookeeper must have shares in Lockwoods and Karma skis Wink. By coincidence only four minutes after you put up a post saying Profeet are putting their prices up, the littlezookeeper comes in with the suggestion of Lockwoods. You can call your self "Bookmyappartmentinmottaret.com" for all I care.

Welcome to Snowheads.

Hmm. I think SMALLZOOKEEPER had a legitimate point, even if he did have a vested interest. Lockwoods have a good reputation, and don't charge a fee. Nor did Precision at Val D'Isere - where a lot of time and trouble was taken over fitting and tweaking my boots - all for the boots and footbeds cost. If Profeet customers find having Profeet convenient and so worth paying the fee, that is fair enough. But I think SZK's point was equally fair.

FWIW, I will probably pop into the boot specialist easiski uses at LDA for a chat - so I have no vested interest myself in this one.

LDA translates to 'Les Deux Alpes' - the ski resort....rather than an individual business. I don't know Les Deux Alpes, but easiski, or someone who does will probably be along later and let you have the name of the shop

DB, At risk of taking the bait, i did once work for Lockwoods and it was the best time of my life. My point rests, why charge for the service? It's what sets a good shop apart from an average one. We dont charge(omits the name of our store for fear of plugging it!), but i would like to take more money, a booking fee including footbed could be a way to do it however i dont want to ask people to do this. ProFeet are a great outfit and the footbeds i've seen coming out of there are exceptional however to pay up front for your business i feel lacks ethic. Lockwoods are at least as good if not better, i know the guys well and they have been doing their job that way for years, i feel this is exceptional service, something to appaude. It gets you the skier the best deal, end of. Cool

scottp, I was being lazy. LDA = Les Deux Alpes - no where near London, I am afraid! You post is rather a stark reminder, for those of us who have been at Snowheads for a while, not to assume everyone has the background of abbreviations/in-jokes. My apologies.

i have had a look at lockwoods but think that profeet have a wider selection of boots for narrow foot types so will give them a go.

I am hoping to get new boots as well as replace foot beds in my exhisiting pair, what would a fair price be for a second set of beds for the old boots?? given that they have done all the measuring up etc for the new ones?

SMALLZOOKEEPER,

Are you still on commission from Lockwoods or something? (throws more bait)

I'm just pulling your leg where's your sense of humor gone, did you lose it in La Rosiere too?

Seriously for what it's worth even though I live in a city with a very high percentage of skiers I still travel 500-600 km to have my boots fitted. I don't pay a fitting fee but do pay additional 'resonable' charges for boot fitting (mostly materials).
As spyderjon says, Profeet can get away with it because they are in London. It'd be interesting to hear from someone who has used both Lockwoods and Profeet.

DB, I owe the owner of Lockwoods alot. He kept faith in me when i was stuck in a pretty dark place. I maybe as a result show bias. But if he kept the faith with me i'm sure he's doing the right thing by all that are there. Cool

I can come close to that as two different members of my family have used Profeet and Solutions 4 feet.

I am firmly reccomending the one who used Profeet to make the geographic effort and go and see Colin Martin at Solutions 4 Feet in Bicester, I feel confident that he will be able to resolve the problems that Profeet couldn't.

I have problem feet and had boots and footbeds fitted at Lockwoods 2 seasons ago.
I was advised on snowHead to pre book which I did and I spent all morning with them for fine tuning etc.
Following the advice on breaking in the footbeds (they are quite extreem due to arches problems) I have had no problem with my boots in 2 seasons and never had to return for any further fittings or tweaking.
I had some rubbing last week when I used them but think it was my own stupidity in forgetting to readjust them after a few runs rolling eyes

I've used Profeet and ended up doing the fine tuning myself after they completely misinterpreted what they were looking at and pointed me at the door when the hour was up with a half fitted pair of boots Evil or Very Mad

I'd head north next time, even if Lockwoods do a poor job you don't get charged extra for it.

I have no idea, it's your business. I simply stated what I paid at Profeet and I thought I had value for money. Maybe Profeet has to pass on the cost of fitting because all they do is sell footwear and fit them. Other places (S&R, Lockwoods) may be able to absorb the cost of fitting boots by making adequate profits on other equipment and clothing. It all depends on the business model, of which I'm unfamiliar because I'm not in the business.

I am booked in at profeet for a full fitting next week - I questioned the cost of the appointment when so many other operations offer it for free. My reason for booking lies simply in that it is located in the city and offers two late nights a week - perfectly suited for fitting after work. If it does turn out that they are offering some kind of advanced service (which I doubt) then I will be sure to let you know.
