Poster: A snowHead

I know that top speeds and people's claims have often been discussed on the forum. However, I thought that this yachting site's approach to going fast was rather neat. http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/speedfreaks/
Each claim comes with a picture of their GPS read out, and more interestingly, their is a plausability rating. Might be fun to replicate for snowspeed freaks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

...or just go to Les Arcs and have a go on a purpose-prepared slope where no "innocent by-standers" will get hurt? Sorry to be a kill-joy but I do think there's a danger of people being more interested in their GPS read-out than the safety of other piste users.
If you got to Les Arcs, you'll get a certificate and a 100% plausibility rating! And it's your average speed over 100m...rather than a quirk of GPS tracking; I have noticed some speed "spikes" with my Garmin Foretrek 2001. Also, most GPS do not account for vertical travel...so your actual speed is probably substantially higher if you're on a steepish slope...usually required for a decent speed!
Speed is GREAT...but please err on the side of caution when it comes to other piste users.
All the best,
Nigel

Just for the record, my own claims:
70mph on-piste (Cervinia, c. 3500m...on 171cm slalmom skis!)...according to GPS; plausibility "high" coz average speed over 50 mph.
241.450kph (Les Arcs)...on 238cm speed skis

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

DrBullet, I don't think anyone's going to beat that.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've bought myself one of these to have a play with when skiing, it's got a speed readout on it.

Well that's a bugger, that link should have been for a Navman X300 rather than a WWII landing craft it would certainly be an interesting sight on the slopes.

FenlandSkier, Had loads of fun with my A300 last season. swapped it with the kids to see who was fastest (on empty pistes of course), Needless to say they all left me in the dust.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

FenlandSkier, you are def. going in the right direction, loads to do around there. Do you use your navman for other stuff?

I haven't yet rpft@rpft.co.uk, but then I only bought it last weekend (£50 off ebay!!!) I'll take it for a walk around town and out on the bike and suchlike so it won't just be for skiing use.
Sunny Hunny's a great spot (although the pier's a bit short ), grandad had a static caravan there when I was a kid, happy times.

You know it makes sense.

The X300 is sound.. but not immune to knocks - i attached it to me and threw myself down a welsh mountain this weekend, by the time i had got to the bottom it had turned itself off - presumably through all the bumps etc..
Might be better off wrapping it in some slight cushioning.. seemed to keep its signal pretty well
