Poster: A snowHead

Early snow in West New York has caused major disruption to an area which prides itself on being 'weather ready'. Because many trees were still carrying a lot of leaves, they collected the heavy wet snow until many dropped boughs or fell, taking out power to a large part of the area. Washington has declared Buffalo-Niagara a federal disaster area...

The snow was so heavy that the plane tipped up
The city of Buffalo has lost 50-60% of its trees, there were 500,000 without power, still 200,000 without it today and not expecting full service until Friday. It looks like a war zone, needless to say, even for Buffalo this was a freak occurance.

you normally don't get that much snow while the trees still have leaves - that an awful lot of snow loading - even for bare branches!

I guess it's the "wetness" of the snow that has the planes toppling.

The snow was really heavy, it was the worast type of wet snow I Have seen since I moved here. My SUV had real trouble in 4WD to get through the stuff, people were stuck on the thru'way for many hours becasue they could not drive.
The saddest thing is the trees, we have alot of parks in the city and they have been destroyed

dbiggins, we lost 15 million trees in Surrey (England's most wooded county) in one night in 1987. I thought the landscape would never be the same again, but the recovery has been astonishing. They found that not clearing the deadwood actually led to the best regeneration in the woods. Obviously, more active management is required in built up areas, but you wouldn't now know the difference in the leafy suburbs either.

How is it going?
The projected date for all restoration of power was Wednesday. Most often they get that up and running sooner than they project, but with all the tree damage, I wondered if it would be possible.
Most often the first snow of the year is exciting, but there wasn't much good to say about what hit Buffalo.
