Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just an off topic spelling observation Toofy Grin . The place in Idaho is pronounced by the Americans as you have spelt it, but in fact they spell it Boise Puzzled

Alastair Pink, true but when they have places like Poughkeepsie it's easier sometimes to just 'spell it as you say it'.

That Ron LeMaster does super stuff doesn't he? I am thinking (thinking I am) that the gentleman in the backseat is one Mr. Miller - Now, girls and boys.... wink this is not the sequence you should be looking at when appreciating near perfect technique. Laughing However, for the less initiated watching this thread you should also note that although (because it's slalom) the skiers are putting their outside hands forward to block the gate, their INSIDE SHOULDER is ahead in all cases. Many intermediates make the mistake of bringing their outside hand, arm and shoulder through the turn first = rotation = flat skis = problem on ice or steep.

Alastair Pink, Thank you - I'll remember that one (don't think I've ever seen it written before, but the place is the topic of a famous quote from the film Hot DoG) Very Happy Very Happy

ssh & easiski, Been away for a couple of days just seen your responses. I think he was really saying that perhaps I hadn't been taught some of the basic techniques before trying to get my skis on edge. I'm sure all will be sorted in January in LDA Smile

The rub is, though, that Ron Le Master's site is littered with world class skiers who, momentarily, pass through the backseat...

Don't confuse (easily done) backseat with extending the ankles and placing the BoS ahead of the CoM at the start of the turn.

Taking Mr.Miller as an example:

Bode thrusts his feet ahead as he makes the transition between turns. By doing this, Bode establishes more inclination and greater edge angle earlier than most of his opponents. This enables him to get his skis up on edge earlier-and farther-than others, resulting in a tighter turn.

You can clearly see from the 1st frame to the 5th frame how his ankles go from fully flexed to fully extended.

Bode's secret lies in what his body does during the transition. His CoM takes a more direct line down the hill through the transition than his feet do. Even though his CoM is behind his feet in the transition, Bode uses his remarkable agility and balance to catch up with his feet by the time he starts to carve, thereby putting him in balance over the forebody of his ski.

You can also see this move done by Rocca (above) - but Bode's angles and range is far more.

and there are far too many can openers around here this week.

Sorry. Base of Support.

Which in the main, are the feet, and can be supplemented by a pole plant, for example in bumps or steeps.

Are you now seeing Bode's transitions in a different light?

I would say it's a pedantic nuance.

I demonstrated this at Tamworth the other evening to 3 BASI instructors, I skied 2 runs, 1 in the backseat, and 1 moving my feet ahead of my CoM in the turn transition. Until they saw this for themselves side-on about 3 feet away from me, it was hard to convey what the difference was.

The time between frames 3 & 5 is milliseconds. Bode's thrust of the feet forward is a tactical manouevre in order to gain an advantage of an early edge higher up in the turn than his competitors. Through his strength and athleticism he can re-direct his CoM down the fall line whilst his feet take a different route. The reason I'm hesitant to say that he's in the backseat is that during those few milliseconds between frames 3 & 5 his CoM and BoS are travelling in different directions (at right angles, if you like).

The conventional view of backseat in a recreational skier is the knees getting bent, bum moving behind and down in the opposite direction to their feet. So no forward movement of their feet, no sideways movement in their body.

Bode on the other hand is moving his feet forward and his body down the hill (say at 90 degrees to his feet).

Oh. And he's leaning on his inside pole in the last frame. And pointing his outside pole sideways. Must be a crap skier then. rolling eyes

100% agree. Bode is a risk taker, he will sometimes sacrifice technique in favour of tactics and line.

Which means a 1,2 or 3 podium, or DNF. The Austrians on the other hand are much more consistent.

Race coaches do (should) not point their early racers to Bode and say copy that.

Bode has incredible strength, atheleticism, and ability to create variations with technique/tactics that makes him a leader in new ways of apporaching a course (eg; drift & lock). For the coaches on here that are familiar with the PPARVIC mnemonic of skills development, he is at the "C" Composition stage. A world away from us conventional skiers.

M'be not in gates, but isn't the tactic V8 describes hugely similar to what one might use to anticipate changing snow texture?
Going from groomed snow to a snow whale straight from the cannon, or to rain-soaked snow, or to crusted sugar, so that the skis get yanked back under the CoM?

I'm curious as to what V8 suggests happen above the CoM, chin/shoulder/arms to waist. Is there some sort of muscular preload?

slikedges, what do you see instead? If using IE and you see a little red X, something in your chain from ISP to screen is probably blocking the pic link. For example. my router blocks some snowheads' signature pics as it thinks they are pornography/illegal/other dubious nature.
