We have used Inghams and Crystal - although we now prefer to DIY.
Inghams have always been good.
Can't say the same about Crystal - poor documentation and poor customer service. I would have to say that even if Crystal were half the price of Inghams or DIY, I would not use them as they are worth somewhat less than that.

EDIT - Ski Thompson - challet only (still available)
This traditionally decorated chalet is situated in a peaceful residential area of Kaprun. Located above the resort centre, the Hohe Tauern has good views across Kaprun and the surrounding mountains. If you'd rather not walk down to the lifts, the ski bus stops below the chalet and goes to the local lifts and to the glacier. The chalet is also convenient for the Lechnerberg beginners' ski lift.

Folks,
Stayed there in January this year - it was REALLY cheap (£300 each including flight and transfer) - but would not recommend it unless it was again REALLY, REALLY cheap
Poor location - still need the bus to get to the nursery slope - very important for us! and chalet really needed an overhaul
Despite that, we had a great holiday!

I've been with the following companies and would be prepared to go with them again:-
Inghams, Crystal, Snowline, Ski Beat, Skiworld.
The quality of the service has been mixed but it's never been so bad as to spoil a holiday.

Wayne, your suggestion for accomodation and flights alone comes to over £3000. And that's w/o food or transfers! As opposed to £2400 all in from Crystal.

Ghost Dog,
Sorry, I didn't look at the costs. Just had fun searching around for somewhere that looks nice to stay. Think this may be why the DIY'ers do it, it's fun.
But geoff10 stayed in that place and said it's not too good anyway.
Scott Dun has some mega places but I think slightly (?) out of the price range you're looking for.

it's a bit like asking which resort is the best. All TOs,like resorts, are different |
I think Courchevel ticks most of what I look for in a resort.
Back on topic. I personally like (other than pretentious menus) Mark Warner holidays.
I have never had any problems with them on the very few occations that I have used a TO for my logisitics. I think they do a good job. I know some people will disagree, but like you say, everyone is different.

Quite agree with you Wayne, it's fun looking, and you get to go places the TO's dont too. But with wife and kids in tow I want simple. as in turn up at airport and be transported to my Chalet/Hotel. Self catering doesn't do it for me nowadays (never really did) on our boy's trip my idea of s/c is 3 course dinner in a restaurant then pizza at Scotland Yard. And loads of liquid food too.

I've used Inghams, Neilson, First Choice, Skiworld and had no "problems" with any of them.
Inghams were the friendliest reps by far, Neilson took themselves a bit too seriously, and the guy from First Choice in Sauze was totally useless but fortunately we dont tend to find we need the services of a resort rep. Skiworld have so far been by far the best, but thats because the 2 times i have used them they have both been catered chalets and both the chalet hosts were superb: a young lad in Verbier April 2008 and another Scottish ex grad in St Anton Jan 09 who was in particularly quite the perfect host, who didnt mind having a party either!
I am going on my next trip with Ski France as their prices were superb (inc a £10 lift pass for ADH) and I am also using Rocketski next March for a chalet in Serre Che, but beware of some of their Clubhotels as the one I stopped at in SC was more like a prison camp.
Never used Crystal for some reason though.

Would never use Thomson again - transfers and flights were awful. Had no problems with Inghams and Ski France (but agree room was like a hutch). Since having daughter have used Ski Beat and Le Ski as wanted the childcare. None of our friends ski (hoping things will change as their kids get older) and so we like the social aspect of the chalet holiday. Have DIY'd for weekend trips to Kitzbuhel, Grindelwald and St Johan in Tirol which have been fine, but not that cheap.

CaurnieBred, Thomson's flights may have been awful but that's not usually the case and also many small tour ops take an allocation from them. So by booking a small tour op you are not guaranteed that you will not be on a Thomson flight. As it goes there own flights are pretty reliable.

I rate Silverski and Ski Olympic : staff excellent , food very good , flexible , small companies but get all the basics right and try to make the transfer as painless as possible. Ski guiding also very good and we have met a great bunch of people each time. One family told us they had done 10 holidays and not had a bad chalet yet. Possibly just lucky but we could see why - especially when we had 2 incapacitating injuries ( 2 seperate trips ) and the staff could not have done more.
We have had 3 trips with Crystal and not again in comparison with the small TOs. The main difference is the ages of the staff - about half ( or some one third ) in years compared to the small TOs and that age difference often matters in dealing with people. Or maybe it is becuase I am old and crusty I prefer the company of similar oldies...............

You also don't always get a Thomson flight when you book a TUI group holiday.
Not sure if it is still the same, but in previous years, the Bristol-Innsbruck flights for Crystal & Thomson holidays was operated by Lauda Air - and those are really nice flights.
