Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Rack

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I need to buy a ski rack for an upcoming trip to take:

1 x board
3 x ski's. (10-80 style)

I've checked out the Thule ones but by my rough calculations non seem wide enough.

Any suggestions ?

Cheers

David

Buy a box, not a rack - it will keep the gear protected from the elements.

david@mediacopy, Why not hire a roof box?

Buy a roofbox, or keep them inside the vehicle.

On a rack, roadmuck gets into the (a) the bases, so stopping the skis/boards performing as well, and (b) into the bindings, affecting the release. You can protect them a little using a ski bag, but not as effectively (or as securely) as a box.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I was tempted to write "Buy a fox, not a hat" but it would be pathetic.

I agree with Fox - hide the goodies, and protect them from road salt etc. Even 30 years ago I recall a full ski rack being sawn off a car in Aviemore!

david@mediacopy, our roofbox is very useful, you can fit loads in it apart from the skis too. You will probably get the boots in, and it's a good place to put the snowchains and things you may need in a hurry.

Cheers all. The trouble I have is that the car is a little Fiat Panda, hence wanting to keep it minimal ! A box might be a bit much for 'her'.

Not too fussed about the road grime, as I can always wrap them for the trip down and once we are in resort I can't see it being much of an issue with a tin of WD40.

david@mediacopy, .....Try this one 739 EXTENDER SKI RACK They will ALL fit on this, but you might need red flags on the side of a Fiat Panda...! Toofy Grin

It does work - I have seen this on a Fiat Panda 4 x 4

david@mediacopy, I drove the old style 4X4 Panda with skis, and with a roofbox (an enormous 8 ski one Shocked ) both to the Alps and to Scotland - from Kent.

The 'performance' of the car wasn't overly affected....it just felt like it was going to fall over on bendy mountain roads.

BTW - when you move you car - because it's going to snow and the plough is coming thru, it's a really really good idea to make sure all the windows are closed before leaving it ! Laughing

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I suspect it's not a good idea to put WD40 on your bindings - bindings are essentially "greased for life" and anything which might remove or change the characteristics of said grease is bad news Evil or Very Mad

I occasinally give them a squirt around the ski breaks to stop them from icing up, but perhaps some road salt will do the trick Toofy Grin

david@mediacopy, WD40 is not good stuff to go near bindings - there is a specialist grease to use - WD40 is great at driving out moisture.. but the residue is also great at attracting and retaining dust and small stones. rolling eyes

With the Panda mentioned above, I used to pack my skis in a ski bag and bungee that directly on to the roof bars. I used a ski rack in the mountains (to save faffing around with bungees) - but a box is really much nicer...

May we assume that at least on one occasion you made the minor omission not to close said window.....? Toofy Grin
