Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Resort Dilemna

I've booked to go to Morzine in January with my wife and another couple. We have a child each.

I need to book another one for a week starting 4th Feb for us and our parents.

I've found another place in Morzine but as I've never been I don't know if it is good or not. The problem is I need to book it now. I need a resort that is close to Geneva and it seems to tick all the boxes (for a family holiday).

Am I right in thinking this? Someone else suggested Avoriaz but I don't think it has as many facilities. Any advice?

Hi Jack Hallam. I've got a place in Morzine and know it reasonably well. Morzine / Avoriaz and Les Gets should all be fine for you. Which one would be better depends on what and how you like to ski.

How old are the kids? Do you want lessons? What type of runs do you ski? Are you a high mileage or low mileage skier?

You could also consider the Grand Massif (Flaine / Morrillon / Samoens) or Megeve if you fancy a change - they're all within an hour to an hour and a half of Geneva.

Edit - to include missing sentence above.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Are your parents skiers?

I would not describe Avoriaz as being particularly non-skier friendly.

An alternative which would "tick the boxes" i.e. close to Geneva and OK for non-skiers is les Gets.

I'd second that. Les Gets is a nice village.

Chatel might be worth a look.

I must admit achilles that I've never really warmed to Chatel - partly because it's built on the side of the hill and partly because the snow's never been as good over there as around Morzine / Les Gets / Avoriaz.

Saying that, I'm determined to give it more a go this season.

Nick L - completely agree on the Les Gets front - which I'd meant to include in the message above and have now done so.

The only downside with Les Gets, I think, is that it's not so good if you're a high mileage skier.

Wife and I ski mainly black and red. The parents used to ski years ago but will need lessons i guess. Kids are 12 months and 2 years old.

The chalet I'm looking at booking is 10 mins walk from the centre. Are the bus services any good or should I get one closer to?

Cheers

"10 minutes walk" is a bit of a variable quantity in Morzine - half the resort is flat and half the resort is, broadly, up hill. Can you get a location on the town map and / or send me a link and I'll have a look to see if I can work out where it is.

The bus service is generally good though - although it stops running around 7:30pm - but a 10 minute walk to / from beers is ok.

If you're black / red fans then I'd avoid Les Gets unless you're staying in a chalet that takes you out in a minibus and provides guiding. The only reason, as much as I like Les Gets, is that the black / red terrain is limited.

Morzine would be fine - but as you're staying there in January I'd suggest looking at Avoriaz as you'll have quicker access to advanced terrain, but could then get back to resort quickly.

The difference in facilities between Morzine and Avoriaz is that Avoriaz is a ski resort and Morzine is a proper local town - but it's easy enough for someone staying in Avoriaz to get to Morzine by "public transport" taking the Prodains cable car down and then the bus.

If you want lessons for your parents then I'd suggest booking them in advance - www.britishskischool.com for Morzine / Les Gets and, confusingly because it's a different company, www.britishskischool.co.uk for Avoriaz.

I'm also PMing you something (not accommodation related!).

Hi Jack

Has anyone suggested La Clusaz - it's only an hour from Geneva and offers lots for skiers of all levels, as well as good childcare facilities. The snow is always really good in February, although like anywhere it starts to get busy for the half term holidays as the Frenchies are on half tem for most of February. It would be best to avoid February in any resort if you can. Morzine and Avoriaz are particularily mad at this time of year - I've sampled it first hand and couldn't wait to get back to la Clusaz and away from the 1/2hr lift queues and the crowds of English people. There was hardly a French voice amongst them.

I hope this helps

Cheers, dave
