OK, there are some dupes and "unusual" terms in my list, but all in all, I think we skiers/boarders are holding our own quite well in this matter.

Does "squeaky (snow)" count? I *think* I've heard it without the "snow" bit once or twice, but it is normally used as the adjective.

Sure, "squeaky" (ie, cold and dry) counts. If we put that word in, we better also add "hollow" or "whumpfy", a sound you definitely *don't* want to hear if you are traversing a steep slope.

Tom, Whitetailer! What about granular, loose granular, frozen granular, wet granular!? Good old POWDER. And "old powder", a term for the depth hoar that forms on the surface of TG snow. Name each flake; plates, stellars, columns, needles, dendrites, etc. Many varieties of each of these basic forms. Classification of snow crystals according to Magono and Lee (1966) lists 80 kinds.

laundryman, I know exactly what you mean, but I don't think I have ever heard anyone use that term when skiing. Is it in common use where you are from?
DCGaper, OMG, how in the world could I have missed those terms. Thanks! BTW, who are you? Do I know you from Epic or somewhere else?
Columbo, maybe where you are from, brown snow is grit driven by winds from the Sahara, but in these parts, its nothing quite so exotic. It's just a euphemism for a run which is showing more mud than snow.

You have a great selection of words for snow, I know you are aware of many others.
Chocolate chip, usually melting (like ice cream) with loose stones mixed in. Another of Whitetail's most popular flavors!

A terrific list, Physicsman. It just needs a UK touch to complement 'Sierra Cement'.
I'd propose 'Cairngorm Concrete'. Scottish freeze/thaw patterns can produce impressively hard pistes. Nice to see 'Porridge' in there, though - a Scottish breakfast favourite.
