Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A. Harry Griffin dies at 93

A. Harry Griffin, arguably the most evocative writer of the northern hills and mountains, has died at the age of 93.

Every fortnight for 53 years he contributed The Guardian's 'Country Diary', taking readers to magical places and wondrous sights.

He was a skier, occasionally tackling Helvellyn or other high slopes, but it didn't really matter what he was writing about. His mastery was taking the reader away from daily toils to special places, landscapes and experiences. You really felt you were 'there'.

Here's the Guardian's obituary.

And here's one of Harry Griffin's little articles, on skiing at Raise and the hut of the Lake District Ski Club.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
What a sad loss.

Thankyou for bringing this to our attention. I don't think I ever met Harry Griffin, but he must have been there when I first skied at Raise in the 1970s.

His article about Lake District skiing is very accurate and evokes some great memories of Cumbrian skiing in days gone by.

Unfortunately I don't think the season 2000 did turn into a particularly good winter despite the promise of 1999. 2001 would have been better, were it not for foot and mouth.

It seems that he is however being proved correct about climate change, although interestingly some weather forums are hinting (again) at a potentially cold winter to come this next season.NehNeh

Certainly the pioneering efforts of skiers such as Harry Griffin mean that if we do get the snow then the Lake District ski tow is in an excellent condition to utilise it.
