Actually Macunaga is ideal for beginners & is one of the most beautiful resorts I've ever visited.

Ill back up what ssnowman says about Macugnaga.
Thats where i learnt to ski and the scenery was outstanding, the village and everyone really friendly and the ski school excellent.

I'd agree with Macugnaga too but qualify that it's ONLY ideal for beginners and families and definitely not a place for a week for an intermediate/advanced group nor for party animals. Lifts from top of the village (Pecetta) to little mid-station take you to gentlest tree-lined slopes you could wish to learn on with a couple of token reds a little higher up for later in the week. Cable car from Staffa however takes you to near 3,000 metres where you can play around on a couple of gentle runs in a bowl at the top of the mountain and then catch the car back down again a little later. The main runs back down from that hilltop provide awesome panoramas along the valley but are quite exposed and can be disorientating in a blizzard !
The buildings & the square in Staffa village are very pretty & the square is surrounded by cafes and restaurants and wonderful on new years eve. The way the French and Italians like to play with their fireworks, I'm surprised any of them have got any fingers left.
